I look at this and can't help but wonder how many homeless families could be housed there or how much food it could have bought for the hungry instead. Yet I also see it's beauty and your fine photo of it gloriously bathed in a holy light

As you know my friend - I too share these thoughts... in many ways it is an "industry" that really does support a town, that not so long ago was a very small village / hamlet.... as to how far down the "chain" the benefits pass - well I have my doubts!!! Thank you for the complement!!

100 year ago (in May) the Virgin Mary appeared to three small shepherd /shepherdesses (which continued on the 13th of subsequent months) and Fatima became a place of pilgrimage much like Lourdes in France... at the 100 year anniversary the Pope will visit for a special mass - and preparations (including refurbishment of hotels and public areas) is already underway..
A whole industry has been created in about the last 70 years to provide hotels, hostels, restaurants, gift shops as well as church structures (old and very new) to cater to the multitudes that visit throughout the year...Β
I am not a religious person - my faith is closer to your own... But I do like the energy of the place (out of "season") and of the small chapels, as well as places closer to my home, where is can find solitude as well as solice and peace of mind...
