The nightmare is whatever you fear the most. It depends from person to person.
The book is not the holy book, I'm not religious and I think religion is the root of all evil. Religion caused more wars, deaths and suffering than anything else in the world.

People cause evil as they can cause good, religion and politics are pretexts, hate and the hunger for power are the true reasons. Religion didn't start the two world wars, didn't caused genocides and suffering as communism, fascism and extremism did.

See in these sites some discussion about wars, and other kinds of suffering, caused by religion. According to this study, religion has caused the killing of many more people than the deaths of WWI and WWII combined.

Communism and fascism caused a much smaller impact. These are very recent ideologies, religion has thousands of years. And if 20th century ideologies caused many deaths in a short span of time, it's just because the wars are global now, due to the available technology now. In former centuries, wars were much more localized because there was no transport technologies, no telecommunications, etc.
If you compare the number of wars and the constant suffering that religion has imposed on people for thousands of years, there's no comparison to communism or fascism. Religion has been PERMANENTLY causing pain, in one way or another, since thousands of years. Think about the Inquisition, for example. Or the religious terror in the Aztec or Maya civilization. It's not only deaths, it's the terror that religion imposes. Permanently. Everywhere.
Religion also imposed the dark ages, a period of almost 1000 years of no evolution in art, science or technology. A period of ignorance, terror, stagnation.

Communism&Fascism killed tens of millions in a shorter amount of time. They killed in a century more that religiously motivated wars in half a century. Religion is not all that evil, cuz ifi ti was there wouldn't be 6 billion believers out of 7 billion people. You're wrong, art and technology had evoled and were never touched by religion. The greatest minds of the Reneissance were religious and they art evolved, just look at the paintings of Caravaggio,Michelangelo,Leonardo da Vinci. The world had evolved even though religion existed and evolves as we speak
