Have you ever thought of creating a 3D graphic novel or book of your images stitched together into a story?Β  I think that you would be very successful. Β

How long did it take you to get it done? Β What was the hardest part? Β If you don't mind my asking. Β I think it looks great. I am planning on starting a forest project soon and wondering how big of an undertaking it will be. Β

Thanks.
It's hard to say exactly the time because I almost never work on a single image uninterrupted. I usually start an image, abandon it, start another, abandon it, continue another, start another, continue another, finish another, etc. Anyway, just as a rough estimation, if I'd done it uninterrupted, I'd probably take 2 or 3 full days.
The hardest part in this particular image was probably the lighting. In forest images, usually the lighting is key and to get a good balance dark/light may be difficult. I would say that 60% of that time was spent in lighting.
The second hardest part in a forest image (at least in my case) is to simulate randomness. Yes, you read it right - simulate randomness. A completely random positioning of the trees may look natural but it may lack in beauty or it may be too dense and hide important details of the image. A very beautiful positioning may lack in realism. It's usually not very easy to reach a tree distribution that looks deep and random enough but that also looks good and shows enough of the background.
I'd say these two aspects are the key to a good forest image.

Really cool and eerily gorgeous! It kind of reminds me of this thing I remember seeing as a little kid that my imagination ran away with (storytime; when I was in the girl scouts, about 8, we had a big slumber party thing with all the area scouting groups in a town hall. Sleeping bags on the floor and campfire stories and everything. Then when it came time to go to sleep, there was this thick stack of tables and chairs around a weird purplish nightlight (maybe a nightlight? Might have been an alarm light or something, point is it was close to the floor) on the other side of the hall that made an image a lot like what you made, with the thin tall tree trunks and glowing light. I was in awe and CONVINCED if I went over there I'd enter an enchanted forest or something, buuuuuut then got caught on my way over by the scout leader and sent back to bed. I pouted a good long time before I finally fell asleep. )

So mystical and peaceful and beautiful... this reminds me a bit of the end sequence of the original (Disney) Fantasia movie, with the procession of people carrying candles through the forest.

ok, I need a hint...where is the person in this one? Β You always have someone in your images, and it's awesome 'cause it's lends to the perspective on the view.

ArthurBlue In reply to s3ctor [2014-01-24 22:06:57 +0000 UTC]

There's no one this time. Originally I thought of adding one, as I usually do, but when I saw her there... it just didn't feel right, I'm not sure why. I somehow had a kind of a feeling that the person was an intruder here.
