Description This piece was done by my dear friend Sarah, [link] ,and I. She set me this gorgeous drawing of Lara rock climbing outside Area 51 in the Nevada level from Tomb Raider III (a most awesome level by the way!) She really captured the feel and essence of this level of the game. A great pose for Lara and some canyons, and boom! An awesome drawing. I had the honor and pleasure of coloring it in.

Sarah is pretty famous in the Tomb Raider fan world, so if you haven't looked at her gallery already, stop what you are doing right now and go look. She has the coolest drawings!!!

Such amazing colours, I can't belive how skilled you are!
You really brought the piece to life, love how you manage to get such bold and striking colours by using colored pencils! I struggle alot with that myself, so kudos to you!

Wow, thank you for the very kind compliment!!!

The key to colored pencil is building up layers of color. For example, I didn't just color the sky one or two layers of turquoise... no, I did 2 layers of muted turquoise, one layer of light aqua, and finished it with 2 layers of cloud blue. It seems like a lot of work but trust me the effect is worth it. Give it a try sometime, just play with some color. You'll open up a whole new world.

You're most welcome! That's actually quite a useful tip, I gotta try that. Maybe it will do a whole lot of difference.

How do you do it, Jen? Really, how? I color my pictures from time to time, but in no way do they come to life like this as you made it happen. You just blow me away with your talent. I mean, I have Prismacolor pencils, and I've used them quite a few times, but it's nothing compared to yours. As I said, I may draw the pictures but to me, it's your colors that breathe life into Lara.

You did such an amazing job on those canyon cliffs and Lara's skin and hair is absolutely gorgeous! I find myself coming back, over and over again to look at what an incredible job you did. Heck, even the fence looks great, and that must of been a pain to color, seeing as there's not a lot to work with. I'm digging all that texturing on the sand and how you blended Lara in within those colors. The sign even has some dirt on it! Excellent work again, dear! I can't wait to do another picture with you!

Oh wow! What a HUGE compliment! You realize I am going to have a huge ego today, right? Hahaha!

Well to be honest when I was in my early teens I did a lot of landscapes. My dad is a landscape artist and I learned a lot from him. Its really the details that make something look dimensional and polished. In fact we have just a phrase for it. "Environmental Skidmarks". I live by it. I believe in it. HAHAHA I know its a silly name but its true. When you use the environmental skidmarks, you'll have a winner every time.

It may be a huge compliment, but it's a true one, that's for sure. And you deserve to have a huge ego; You're just that good, Jen.

It must of been really neat to learn from a landscape artist. I was taught by a teacher who was talented, but in no way a really skilled artist.

Environmental Skidmarks... That is smeared into my brain.

Well when my dad and I first coined the term, we were having a father-daughter art discussion at a family barbecue. He was giving me a lesson about how to view light from an atmospheric sense, and it was at sunset time. He pointed at the sky and said, "See those little streaks of color?" And me being the joker that I am, I said, "Ah yes, those skidmarks?" And thus the theory was born. And I think everyone who overheard us laughed and rolled their eyes at us.
