How dARE I try to draw Shadow from behind. What was I thinking
Here we have, for my Camelot: Kingdom of the Wind fancanon, the introduction of Guinevere the Echidna.
Guinevere is from the kingdom of Carmelide, a land neighboring the great realm of Camelot. Her original position there was not a Princess, but a highly respected Lady of the Sunset. Guinevere took up the Sunset Title as a girl after the young Lord of the Sunset forsook his duties and ran off to join King Arthur of Camelot’s new Round Table. Kind and compassionate, she was content to spend her life dedicated to a cause which would distract her from worrying over her father, Leodegrance’s, dangerous job as Carmelide’s chief warlord. Guinevere spent her days watching over the Sunstone. The Sunstone was said to be the only artifact gifted to Carmelide by the otherworldly Avalon (which causes most of the kingdom’s jealousy toward Camelot, a kingdom boasting several artifacts.) Most of Carmelide’s citizens believe that their kingdom’s prosperity comes from the Sunstone’s glow, but the truth is far less noble. King Brutus, an echidna who came to power by force generations ago, is known for his strangely long life and shrewd mastery of strategy.
When King Arthur was rumored to have fallen and a new knight named Sonic the Hedgehog had taken Camelot’s throne, King Brutus and Leodegrance wanted to test their neighbor’s young leader by trying to seize power. The greedy leaders claimed they wanted to attack Camelot because of the age-old feud from ancient times, wherein Camelot was said to have stolen the Lake of Avalon’s territory through treachery, leaving Carmelide without access to the magical realm. But truthfully, they just wanted the bounty that taking over Camelot would provide.
Guinevere, however, was against it. She wouldn’t hear of attacking Camelot without cause, and especially did not want her father to be spearheading any battle. King Brutus didn’t care about that, but he knew that if the Lady of the Sunset insisted on leaving Camelot in peace, the people of his Kingdom would side with her. So instead, he hatched a far more devious scheme. He manipulated the situation, declaring that he would not declare war on the Realm of Camelot…if they agreed to unite the two kingdoms through marriage. Initially Brutus’ daughter, the Princess Lyonesse, was to go and offer herself as bride to Camelot’s King, but she refused. This left Guinevere to offer herself, sacrificing a life of freedom and her home to keep her land’s people from having to go to war. That was exactly what King Brutus had predicted would happen, and he sent Guinevere to Camelot with a proclamation to the new King.
Sonic, as you can see, is not thrilled with the situation. Guinevere is fine and all—actually, she’s really sweet and pretty great. But marriage is the last thing on the adventurous, gold-hearted hedgehog’s mind after taking the throne. He’s trying to get the Knights of the Round Table to stop serving him and start thinking of themselves as servants of the kingdom and its people. But his Uncle, Sir Hector, and the Sacred Sword Caliburn, as well as his cousin and chief Scholar of the Court, Lady Anna, all insist, for more reason than one, that he must marry the Lady of Carmelide. Of course, Sonic can’t do anything out of duty or honor; he’s always true to what he thinks is right. So instead of marrying Guinevere immediately, he pacifies the court and the neighbors by getting betrothed to her. Then he leaves his royal fiancée to look after the court while he and his knights travel around the kingdom, getting rid of the last vestiges of the Underworld.
This leaves Guinevere far from her home, but determined to do what she must to protect the people of both kingdoms from war. She is thrown several times into situations that require protection, namely from Sir Lancelot. More on what’s obviously to come between these two later.
