Foxy woxy
Can I just take this moment to appreciate the continuity choice in Sonic and the Black Knight to make Sonic remember, almost immediately after seeing someone he knows, that the people who look like his friends are actually characters in the story? He learned that lesson in Secret Rings, and in Black Knight it was just nice that they didn’t pretend like he had to go “QUIT FOOLING AROUND TAILS, I KNOW THAT’S YOU” all over again.
Anyway—that has nothing to do with what I’m about to tell you in the
LORE
This here is a sketched, roughly done drawing of Sonic the Hedgehog’s dearest friend, Smithy. Smithy is a Fox, and a whiz with all things metal. He’s not much for any kind of magic, despite his strange two tails, but ever since he could walk he had an interest in the armory. He grows to be the youngest, yet some say finest, Blacksmith in Camelot’s Castle Town.
Smithy was found when Sonic was young, while the hedgehog family was enjoying their nomadic lifestyle. Smithy was an orphan, native to Christmas Island instead of to the great kingdom across the sea. Sonic had heard, often enough by this time, the story of how his own parents had been killed when he was an infant. He won Sir Hector over by saying something like, “C’mon, Unc! We all know you got a soft spot for orphans. Where would I be without you stickin’ that mustache in my business, making sure I got a roof over my head?” So, though Sir Hector didn’t make it official, Smithy has been living like a little brother with the Hedgehog family ever since. He still doesn’t know what happened to his parents, but Sonic is hid hero and his idol and if he didn’t love sharpening swords and crafting weaponry so much, he’d be chasing after Sonic’s footsteps in Knight Training.
Smithy is…basically Tails the Fox from the usual Sonic canon, with a few notable tweaks to fit Camelot: Kingdom of the Wind. So I won’t delve too much into his personality.
Smithy was Sonic’s best buddy long before he learned of his origins, but afterwards, they were even closer. Sonic appreciated having at least one family member who wasn’t part of the craziness that was his Camelot past; one family member who didn’t expect him to fill any throne or fulfill a prophecy or cast a huge shadow. Smithy is just Smithy, a kind friend who has always had Sonic’s back.
Sonic’s cousin, Lady Anna the Hedgehog, has a huge crush on Smithy. This makes Smithy uncomfortable, whenever he bothers to notice, so he’s spent much of their childhood avoiding her. But when she uncovers the big secret about who Sonic really is and why Sir Hector is so insistent on training him to be a Knight, everything changes. Sir Hector wouldn’t let Lady Anna tell Sonic the truth, and sent her away to Camelot’s Castle Town to “finish her studies…” but really to keep from spilling the secret. Anna was so distraught that Smithy, moved by compassion, offers to go with her and see if he can make his way in Castle Town as a Blacksmith on his own. Sonic is mildly hurt, at first, and unhappy to be losing two of his closest friends at once. But as usual, Sonic never stays down for long, and he chose to be excited for his lil bro, opening a forge in the big city!
When Sonic did find out who he was and embarked on his Quest to Defeat King Arthur, he reunited with Smithy in Camelot’s Castle Town. Smithy was thrilled to have the chance to sharpen Caliburn, the Sacred Sword, but he was cold toward Sir Hector, grouchy with the hedgehog who would keep so many secrets and push Sonic so hard.
Sonic defeats King Arthur and is made the True King of Camelot, and immediately appoints Smithy as the Blacksmith to the Crown.
