Description A very early painting of mine from the early seventies of one of my favourite locomotives the Stanier designed 4.6.0 Jubilee class for the old London, Midland and Scottish railway in whose attractive maroon livery it is seen leaving Liverpool sometime in the late 1930s with an up express for London. The locomotive is carrying the original flat-sided Fowler design of tender not the more usual Stanier version, in fact some early Jubilees were paired with these right to the end of steam in the sixties but most were replaced by tenders from withdrawn Black Fives or 8Fs.

An oil painting like this on board or canvas 20”x30” of your favourite railway subject, British, American or even French, would cost from £1500.

The Mid-Day Scot, perchance? Can't help but notice the GWR through coach behind the tender, and the Scot's a working I know had one.. then there's another further back in the rake.. hmm. Now I'm intrigued!

Are all the scenes you paint fictional as in they're not based on a photograph or image?

It depends, but mainly, especially my railway work, are real locations with sometimes a little artistic licence to make a balanced composition. I think an artist in my field needs to be as authentic as possible in depicting the past by not portraying a situation that possibly never happened. An obvious example would be to paint a picture of a King class locomtive hauling an express train in Cornwall-----------it never happened because the Kings were not allowed over Brunel's Saltash bridge because of their 22 ton driving axle weight hence no King was ever seen in Cornwall!

I think its brilliant how much of your knowledge you put into these! It would so easy for someone to just look at them and think "Its a picture of a train" without being able to appreciate the knowledge behind it all.

Josh, I AM 70 years old and my memory of practically everything I have ever read about railways is embedded in my brain and, of course, I did work on the railway for over two years in my youth and that has stayed with me also, so to me it's just common knowledge or second nature, call it what you may. However many thanks for your kind compliments.

Mike
