Description Five years ago, the song "83" hit the radio airwaves like a meat pie. It was so delicious, everyone wanted a piece of John Mayer despite rumors of his impossible arrogance. Soon, the album "Room For Squares" was selling like hot scandal. Wherever I went around the college campus, people had John Mayer up to their ears. Bookmarks, stickers, pirated CDs, lyric sheets, boyfriend-look-alike's.

Anyway, I loved the songs, not John Mayer. I scanned the liner notes of the CD and found out that one of my fave soul-jazz musicians helped in the production and recording of the said album. I'm talking about Michael MacDonald, former member of The Doobie Brothers, and composer of the song "What A Fool Believes". Note: If you don't know what I'm talking about in here, I suggest you start downloading the songs from Limewire or wherever and see for yourself. And, yes, it's all good!

It can not be avoided. John Mayer became a topic in every conversation on campus. So I struck up a conversation with a schoolmate, Datu, who was taking up Studio Arts. He thought the John Mayer craze is just that... a craze, but the songs are okay. I agreed. And then I veered the chat towards portraiture because I was just plain sick of John Mayer. I asked Datu how is it a lot of colored portraits look too tangerine and not like normal skin.

"Green!", he said.

"What?"

Datu then spoke of a professor who once told them in class that human skin contains a bit of green color and that not everybody knows that. He said when green is mixed into the skin tones, it balances out the oranges from being too saturated. But too much of green causes the skin to look dead.

After giving it some thought, I went and started a portrait just to see if the green-technique would make it look okay. I chose colored pencils so that I can erase mistakes easier compared to acrylics. It was just an experiment. Besides, I don't usually work with colors, and pencils hate me.

And this is the resulting image. I don't like the rendering because it is impatient; colors bunched up in random areas. But I figured that, yes, green works fine on skin tones.

So why did I draw John Mayer? The CD liner notes was lying on the floor, it had his photo in it, and it was the first thing I saw when I entered my cave.

this is nice! I remember being told in an art class that greens and blues tone down skin, but I've yet to attempt it myself.

Great tip! A bit of green tones down the tangerine look. Quite interesting. I like his songs and "83" is certainly a catchy one.

Why was his follow up album not selling so well?

"Heavier Things" you mean? In a way it's quite obvious to why it didn't sell so well. His latest album Continuum may not sell as well either. When he first debut himself, the music was very much raw, acoustic and the lyrics were interesting. The music speaks about John Mayer as an artist trying to be known. The newer music he's been producing sounds a bit "polished" for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm still very much a John Mayer music fan, but I prefer some of his older stuff. Have you listened to his live in concert albums? "Any Given Thursday" is the best live album. Every album has his own unique style and it shows how much he has grown. The newer stuff is heavily based on his electric Fender guitar.

Ah well, the acoustic taste I like better.

Yah, most definitely, but I do like the electric sound. It depends how it's done I guess.
