Description Re-framed and higher quality image for print

Was in the kitchen and inspiration for the photo just sprung upon me sitting there on the work top! What more could you ask for in a subject then it to look natural and be in the warmth of the kitchen - no effort involved!?

What do you think... i was trying to experiment with the composition and this photo seemed to be the best!

EDIT: This is the BROCCOFLOWER !

I don't see it being cabbage, unless you shot that with a high power microscope . . .

That reminds me of a broccoflower, I think it's called. It's a cauliflower and broccoli hybrid, or something.

Composition works though honestly it doesn't seem to have much flow to it, but the details are what keeps drawing me in. The color is kinda wild, that yellow/gold works and is quite the attention getter making this some nice eye candy.

Suggestion wise--- make the image itself bigger, I wanna see your details even more so. 800/900px at the longest would really benefit this a LOT!

You did damn good with this

Ahhhhh I thought it was broccoli, though it doesn't look quite like that either

Usually they look all rubbery and weird though, wheras this looks like it might have fallen through a portal from the future

Andrew-and-Seven [2007-02-28 09:54:50 +0000 UTC]

Interesting subject matter but the picture doesn't leap out at me tbh.

Why?

1) Perhaps the lighting is too soft -perhaps a more direct (from the side) light would throw more of the texture into relief?

2) The DOF is far too shallow so a lot of the image is blurred, and since the shot is about the texture and pattern it is a little self-defeating to have such shallow dof. Sadly, there'll be little you can do about this esp with the camera you used. In fact you'd need a DSLR with a proper macro lens I suspect. I shot a few flowers over the weekend and they are all suffering from a shallow dof as I didn't take a tripod to get down to the f22 end of the lens.

3) The colours look a little artificial - like the white balance is off?

On the plus side mind, it is an amazing looking thing you've found there and must be covered in photo opportunities. And the overall composition of the shot works fine, but I think you've been too limited by the equipment

Keep at it, and you'll get there for sure.

Yer - this was with my last camera too which wasn't as capable - saying that - my newer camera still isn't a DSLR (can but wish...) as to the light its due to no flash and tube lights in the kitchen. It's not naturall... However i must admit i still like the colour it gives...

You've made a decent shot with limited resources - and that deserves praise. Keep at it, mebbe next time grab an angle-poise or similar, put it alongside and then process in B&W to eliminate the white balances issues, boost the contrast and pull out the shadows and shapes. Be a killer shot me thinks

To the kitchen with you madam, look sharp !!

grab an angle-poise??? put it alongside (the old shot???) and process in black and white (didn't work well with this one however....) lol

Okay, I saw your journal, so I'm going to try and give some constructive comments on this one. I'm hardly an expert on this, though, so don't take my opinions too seriously.

When I discuss composition, I usually try to see how the rule of thirds applies. For the most part, here, it doesn't really, though. But I think this is one of those times that the rule isn't really a rule; the composition works very well as it is. The only thing I would have considered would be placing the.... er... top/pointy-thing (what the heck do you call that?) right on the bottom and right third lines (where they intersect). But I think that would ruin the half-and-half shadow effects caused by the lighting and probably ruin the effect of depth the photo already has... so I probably wouldn't like the results of my own suggestion!

In any case, I love the fractal-like abstract quality of this. Overall, I really like this! It's a great shot!

Thankyou very much. I think i did try applying the rule of thirds here and your right - this shot did come out very satisfactoraly with lighting and all things considered. He he - as to the pointy thing - the tip or the top of the cabbage maybe? Duno?!

Once again - Thankyou very much

nice! but two things somehow bother me a bit... Firstly, the sharpest point is a little bit unmotivated..Secondly, the black frame is simply too thick...but that's it

Yes i agree - the black frame is simply to thick... I will go back and re-do it as soon as i get time! Probably next week!

the sharpest point is a little unmotivated? Hmmm - maybe the frame is to thick - have to go back and look. But thankyou and thanks for the crit - not getting much of it constructively at the moment so really appreciate it!
