That one reminds me on an old tank idea. It had tires similair to those and tracks simultan.
The reason was simple. Use the tracks on the extreme grounds we can have (all muddy with a lot of evelation issues) and use tires when tracks break. Or when on the streets on longer runs.
Never got used that idea. Not here at least. The Soviets used that idea in WWII though.

Yeah, I suppose they tried a lot of combinations to see what worked best. These are wheeled because they found in Southern Africa it works better (as long as they are all independently operated). I've seen a few and apparently they have very good cross country performance.
