Generally I just try to figure out how the grid wraps around the form, and then i work the scale shape into the grid boxes... The ones on her tentacles are just random shapes (there's no set pattern there). And of course, reference, reference, reference. Looking at snakes and fish and observing how their scales flow is SUPER helpful :>
