Description A casefile for the consideration of the Intergalactic Xenobiological Initiative [IXI]. In accordance with the Initiative's rules and guidelines, certain pieces of information are withheld from public access.
Planet: Ionia
Animal: Fulltrot (Fulltrot camelotops)
Habitat: The Arid Tundra
Diet: Fungivore; grazer
Niche: Large herding animal

Description: Fulltrots are among the strangest of the animals found on Ionia... relatively speaking. A majority of life on Ionia stems from a six-limbed common ancestor, all being members of the ever expansive hexapod superclass. Along with the hexapods survived an evolutionarily distinct lineage: true, four-limbed tetrapods. Rugged survivalists, Ionian tetrapods hold their own in a world of six-limbed competitors, despite all odds.

The tetrapods of Ionia are all parts bizarre and archaic in build and feature. They could be described as 'mammalian,' possessing true hair as opposed to the wide range of hair-like pycnofibers found on many hexapods, like the maned ammit. What lies under the fur, however, remains relatively unchanged over millions of years of evolution: a semi-thick carapace/exoskeleton, malleable like muscles in some areas and hard as armor in others. Ionian tetrapods, thusly, are a figurative chimera of mammalian build and crustacean genetic makeup. The latter feature, as mentioned prior, is borderline unchanged since it first crawled onto land from the ancient Ionian oceans.

The fulltrot (Fulltrot camelotops) is the very model of a quintessential Ionian tetrapod. Its most notable feature is its 'X' shaped head: two protruding mandibles, as flexible as an octopus's arm or elephant's trunk, help the fulltrot grab and consume the fungus patches that grow in the Arid Tundra, while its horns are hard as rock, and help the males in competition for mating rights. The horns are segmented and just soft enough to allow for temporary growth; in the mating season, male fulltrots will enter musth, and blood will rush to their horns, making them big, lethal weapons in combat.

End of casefile. Awaiting approval of Dr. ████████ and Onlooker ██████████.
NOTE FROM DR. ████████: An excellent case study, but I see you labelled it 'Ionian Animal #3.' It would appear you've skipped over a possible Animal #2. A rookie mistake, please just don't do that again! - Dr. D

NOTE FROM ONLOOKER ██████████: DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE AGAIN.

No worries! In many regards, Ionia is very similar to Earth in appearance, but its habitats are strange in comparison. Ionia has its share of deserts, jungles, and oceans, but there’s always something “alien” about them. The Arid Tundra, for example, is a desert where the sand has properties uncannily like crunchy snow. Think of it like being able to build an igloo in the Gobi Desert... that’s the Arid Tundra
