I really like the colors in the piece. The purples of the background are soft and neutral which are good when you have the character as your foreground. I few things to spice it up a bit is to work on variation of the size of rocks you have. And shape. They look too perfect and line up too well. Almost like corn on the cob! If you look at pictures of stone walls and caves, there are no perfect structures. Itβs messy, and unorganized. The shading you have on the background looks really nice. Itβs consistent and you can see some of the divots and facets of the stone, but the perfect pattern and shapes take away from that. Stone also has hundreds of different colors. Donβt be afraid to throw in odd and different colors. Bring more warm tones to the highlights, yellows, pinks, oranges, and then pull in more saturated cool colors into the shadows, like a really rich purple and blue. Add them on a low opacity, and try and use a more scattered brush. That way you donβt have to worry about it looking βtoo cleanβ. Use the solid brush only in a few areas. Make sense?
As far as your character, I really like him. The armor is awesome, and I love the whole design. Relatively good color choices and shading. Try to make it blend in more to the background, to make it look like it βbelongsβ in the picture. The gold is a bit too yellow. Gold is usually only that bright with lots of direct light from multiple angles. Use that sparingly, and use more browns and subtler colors in the other areas.
I know you said you were having trouble with picking out the right brush to use. I can totally sympathize with that. Usually what I use is a custom brush with pressure sensitivity and I adjust the hardness depending on what Iβm doing. On hard shadows and on the basic features, then I soften it and lower the opacity to really blend things together, but I always use a relatively hard brush first.
Your anatomy is pretty darn good, even though the pose is rather basic. Drop the shoulders a little bit, the armor will build it up to make them bigger, and theyβre heavy, so naturally it will weigh down the shoulders. I love the expression and the whole feel of the piece. Itβs pretty epic. So keep it up. (:

lol funny you said that..although the intent was not to make him look nervous...that insight does work out for him knowing his story and all.
I am planning on working on a comic. Some sort of adaptation of the story of our guild in Guild Wars.
The Shade, The Raven and The Lynx (in that order) are actually in this old drawing I made (at the bottom)in their GW versions:

You're getting better with this style :3
I like his design...It seems like he'd be mysterious..*wiggles fingers Hmm...
Might I suggest using a bit of outlining though? It seems a little flat.
