I originally considered painting a picture where the sword takes up the entire composition, with just hints of the warrior around the edges.

Hell yeah! I'm with you on that man! Let's not forget ridiculous armor (you depicted that as well) like chainmail bikinis and pauldrons that are almost thicker than wider (the thicker the better, right?) that would turn a real shoulder into a cut up piece of raw meat if any movement in the joint was to occur.
