Description This is a color pencil drawing that I did back in 2004. The piece is 12" x 18". This is more of a "conceptual" category drawing rather than "still life", but DA didn't have that choice. It is conceptual because of the symbolism, it didn't actually sit on the table for a couple months while I drew it. I took a lot of pictures, and let things mold so I could take progressive shots and apply them to my drawing.

The theme surrounds my experiences with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, cancer. I went through 8 months of chemo (ABVD) and two months of radiation. I have been cancer free since Jan. 18, 2002.

The fruit is about regeneration; from sourly ripe to moldy drivel. The butterfly runs in harmony with a similiar theme: birth and rebirth. The bonsai, which is fairly big now (In real life... would like to do another drawing showing it's size now) signifies wisdom and God... and the growth of such. As for the wood base, I've always liked natural materials, but it's interesting to note how the base is very tense and then begins to open up in the middle with the sky, and how much easier life seems to be at the top.

When I started this drawing it was my goal to create a series entitled "Before, During, and After". Many times, when I am able to draw for me this is the theme that re-enters my mind.

Here is a close up of this deviation:

This is the bowl I made and used as one of the still life props it also has a story and symbolic reasoning for being in this drawing. (Click on link and see description)

Here is other work reflective of my time going through chemo and radiation:

cocept and drawing are both superv.

not only is it very well executed but you can also see the message without the explication you gave the conposition is good though there are some small parts that trhow it out of balance but generally speaking is very good and interesting.

Artsee1 In reply to sunbender [2010-06-20 18:35:11 +0000 UTC]

Love to hear what you feel is not in balance. I always appreciate another person's perspective (If you have time).

sunbender In reply to Artsee1 [2010-06-20 20:17:50 +0000 UTC]

for one there is the color. red is a very heavy color, same as yellow and you have a lot of that on the base, even though it's normal that the lower part is heavier to give a sense of gravity in this case I feel is a little too heavy in this case wich gives the feeling that the tree can barely scape from that heaviness.

opposed to this heaviness in color you have few shadows on the table/wood superfice. it might not be all that much of a deal but the part that is further away from the espectator should be darker than the closer one, oherwhise it might look like a wall, i see there is a slight diference, wich helps give the horizontal feeling as oposed to the vertical one, but i don't feel it's enough.

also, the blue on the bottom part of the background, it adds to the heavy feeling i mentioned before.

Artsee1 In reply to sunbender [2010-06-21 05:11:35 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Those were some great suggestions. The blue was meant to be heavier because it was the "weight of the cancer" that broke into a freeing sky, so in some ways I'm flattered that the parts made you uncomfortable sorta fit with the theme. But thank you again, many people are afraid to truly give input so I value your perspective.

haha, no problem, i have foun that meny people also hate being told what bothers others in their work, I think it shouldn't be like that so i usually live a bit of coment but not so much as to bother the person unless it is requested or i knoe the person well enough to know they won't get mad XD to find someone that actually is open to listen and weight the opinion they are given is actually refreshing.

If i got time i might do a deeper analysis of this one, if that is all right with you.

I really like the concept^^ It is really impressioning how you can put somehow a part of your life in the pic and the viewer actually see it, but in his/her context^^
I would have some drawing-critics, but actually I think the idea is so important here that the drawing itself steps into the backround^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Artsee1 In reply to sonnesama [2010-06-04 14:07:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I am in the process of coming up with another drawing and the idea is the hardest part (I think). Well, that... and the 2/3 point. Where you're just about tired of the picture, but aren't seeing the ending in sight (yet).
