One tip I learned is that you always want at least one complementary colour in your piece. Although, if it's monochromatic, then that's different, but if you have a very red piece, have some green in there. You also don't want a completely balanced image. Big, little, small, and the rule of thirds really help with that.
And if you shade cool, highlight warm. But don't forget, if you shade warm, highlight cool. Lots of people forget that one.
