Description Another fun diversion.

I really like the portrayed personality of Midna, a character from the Legend of Zelda, Twilight Princess Nintendo Wii game.

1/2/2010 Update: Head Gear Rough Form
(See dates on the photos for proper reference.)
12/30/09 Pic - Every time I come back to sculpting after a break it's like I've never sculpted before - feeling so rusty and clumpsy! Ok, to re-start, took the rough shape of the head gear out of freezer (yes, Apoxie Sculpt stays uncured for a long time if you freeze it), and wrapped the parts around the round head. I used Tamiya yellow tape to keep it in place.
1/1/10 Pic - Grooved-in some rough details on the front head gear, while the putty is still semi-hard and not cured. Formed the back half of the circular crown thing that Midna wears. Note that for thin/weak parts, like the ears, I pinned first before adding on putty. This way, the thin/weak parts will stay in place without warping.
1/2/10 Pic - Pinned and added tips to the front head gear. Assembled for initial fit check. Lots of detailing work ahead...

1/6/2010 Update: Refine Head Gear Shape + Detailing
(See dates on the photos for proper reference.)
1/4/10 Pic - The rough form of the round head gear did not have the right draft angles, and the size was a tad too big for the head, so I had to shave it down to re-shape.
1/5/10 Pics - Upper round head gear re-puttied, then details grooved-in while putty is still curing/soft. Then puttied the lower part.
1/6/10 Pics - Pulled head gear from freezer (to keep putty from curing) to continue detailing of head gear. The lower part of head gear was wrapped around the head while curing so that it would fit snug but as separable parts. Then, I decided to have both versions of her hair - normal (on right) and grabber (on left).
Time track: about 27 hours so far.

1/8/2010 Update: Normal Hairdo, Version #1
1/7/10 Pics - The cavity in the head gear is substantially large, so I "recycled" a bad cast of catwoman head, gooped it with putty, drilled hole for the ponytail pin, and let it cure for a few hours. Later, I overlaid yellow putty, waited till it started to cure (~1 hr after mix), then grooved the hairlines with the tool tips shown on right.
1/8/10 Pic - Adding the thin hair pieces at front, this is what the back of Midna looks like with the normal hairdo.

1/20/2010 Update: Version #1 Done. Kit Picture
The head gear required a lot of detailing and rework. After lots of sanding and patching and sanding, the VERSION #1 (normal hair) is finally done!
The black-gray pattern on her is due to overlaying black putty over gray and subsequent sanding. The effect is cool, so I just kept it (usually I prime the finished figure for better showing of sculpting effort). Total sculpting effort is ~55 hours.
The figure kit is made of 8 parts as shown.

Holy cow, this is insane. 55 hours, that's awesome! And just the fact that she is actually standing on her tip toe is amazing. A beautiful replica. Have you or are you going to finish the hair grabber?

Many use polymer clay - need to bake to harden. I use epoxy clay - chemically harden a few hours after mixing. I am self-taught. My WIP deviations show how I work to build up figures. Best way is to get your hands on some clay and start playing with it to see if you have an intuitive sense for seeing lines and forming shapes.

i hope you dont mind me asking but what all did you use to make make that figure and where can you get it?

I use epoxy clay, a two-part synthetic clay that, once mixed, give you 1~2 hrs of work time and it gradually hardens over a day. Two brands I use are Magic Sculpt and Aves Apoxie Sculpt. I bought mine online. If you web-search the names, many places that sell them will pop up.

and will hobby lobby sell it or a model store have it?

I haven't used the stores you mentioned, so I don't know.
You can buy Aves Apoxie Sculpt from vendors on Amazon.com.
I buy Magic Sculp from artstuf.com.

ty for you help, also do you know anything that could be casted to a hard plastic? ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ArtyAMG In reply to Echo114 [2010-08-18 23:03:19 +0000 UTC]

At a hobbyist level, 'hard plastic' is generally cast in silicone rubber or urethane mold, using two-part liquid resin. There is a wealth of info and tutorials at www.smooth-on.com . Have fun learning about mold making and casting.

wow that's so clever, the way you've made her able to stand up!!! did you think of that yourself or did you get that idea from somewhere else?

ArtyAMG In reply to In-The-Distance [2010-02-01 07:57:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Pinning is a pretty common practice in GK (garage kit) figure modeling hobby. But I consider myself a pretty good 'pinner' in clever use of pinning to showcase the work.

Happy that you like the progress.
I use Aves Apoxie Sculpt. It's a two-part synthetic putty that, once mixed, gives 1~2 hours work time before self-hardens.

Well, for a hobby, one should do it only if it provides enjoyment, and that differs from person to person.
