Hiya!Β
I'm hoping to learn the ways of this awesome hobby and was just wondering, how do you prime your figures?(I noticed you used gesso and matte medium) Also, do you apply a topcoat to your paint? If so, could you recommend me any particular brands?
Thanks ^_^

Hi,
I apply the gesso with a brush as primer. I'm starting to use Vallejo Surface primer (#74.600) now as well. It works great airbrushed and hand brushed.Β
For top coat, I used to use Delta Ceramcoat Matte Interior Varnish. I had an older bottle dated 2004 and it seems they changed the formula a little bit and its not quite as matte as it used to be. Also there is an exterior/interior type that is more glossy than just the interior type.
Vallejo also makes a nice matte top coat but its also a hit or miss if the bottle will be truly matte. I've got one really matte bottle, and the other is much more glossy.
Krylon Matte finish is really great but it is a spray and you need a lot of ventilation.Β The other ones were brush on.
Lately though I have not been top coating. I feel it's not really necessary unless you have interchangeable parts and will be handling the painted kit a lot.Β

Thank you for the reply!
I had a quick research into the Vallejo Primer and it looks like what I was looking for in a primer! (Those aerosols look like you could waste a huge amount without trying.. And also those health hazards :/)
I was thinking of getting the Krylon Matte Finish but hearing you say you don't seem to need it, I guess I'm starting to reconsider. Do you experience any 'bad' effects with this though? (Such as dust particles sticking or discolouration?) I'm probably going to mostly display these figures so I guess handling them too much won't be a problem.
Thanks again!

Pyramidcat In reply to Toshki [2014-08-29 18:23:53 +0000 UTC]
It has happened to me before that a dust particle landed right on the face as I was spraying the sealer on, so while itβs highly unlikely, itβs a possibility it could happen. Β
Also if you spray too thickly, the paint will appear frosted. Β There seems to be no yellowish discoloration but applying top coats darkens the paint slightly.
The best thing is to test out a small area, or at least a non-detailed area, to see if you like using it.

Oh dear that must've been horrible. I brought that vajello primer you meantioned and I'm currently awaiting my GK to arrive ^_^Β
I guess I'll try sealing just 'cause I'd like to try pastel shading and would like a seal between it and the paint so if mistakes arise something can be done with it.
Thanks ^_^

Hi, I was wondering if you take comissions? As in I bought a kit by mistake and am looking for someone with skills to put it together.... ^_^; If not, do you happen to know(of) anyone who would?

Pyramidcat In reply to xNaikenX [2012-10-03 19:58:05 +0000 UTC]
Hello,
Yes, some of my work is sculpted by hand. Please go to my website, www.pyramidcat.wordpress.com , and look for the menu or category βscratch buildβ . Those are the sculpture that I made completely by hand. Each entry has a detailed work in progress for how I created the specific sculpture. I am actually revamping some of the entries so that they are easier to follow. Itβs the same basic pictures and information, just presented differently. I still need to finish updating Miaka from 2009, and then go on to some of my 2010 sculptures.
I also have another category for βkitbashingβ, where I started with a garage kit and resculpted some areas to make a new kit. So there is sculpting in these entries also, just not from scratch.
And the rest of the entries are garage kits, no sculpting, but great for prep work and painting tips

I like your resin kit figures. I really hope I can try my hands at one but these things are really hard to find in my country. I can't afford to buy one either. Have you tried sculpting your own figures? Anyway, your masterpieces are a great inspiration to me. I can't wait to see more of your future masterpieces.

Pyramidcat In reply to WeepingBlades [2012-02-12 14:36:42 +0000 UTC]
Thanks ^_^ Some of my work is sculpted by me from scratch in my gallery but most are pre-sculpted resin figure kits. Sometimes Mandarake has resin kits really cheap, like only 1500yen, and they ship internationally, so maybe give them a try. You can search in English, but get more search results in Japanese.

P.D. please do a tutorial on sculpting faces, they're so god damn hard to get right, specially the lips hahaha
π: 0 β©: 1
Pyramidcat In reply to FrozenHaka [2012-02-10 01:40:02 +0000 UTC]
Hi ^_^ In my WIP folder in my gallery I have a few examples of sculpting faces within the larger WIP files. I think sculpting the lips are especially challenging as well. I also recommend to look at anime PVC or unbuilt resin kit faces so you can really study the face from all angles.

FrozenHaka In reply to Pyramidcat [2012-02-10 02:21:25 +0000 UTC]
yeh i guess it'd be easier to study faces that way, i was looking at 3D models in my screen but it's just not the same.

hey, erm... I know you're probably a busy person, and that you'd rather work on your own stuff... but I have a GaoGaiGar Kotobukiya model kit, and some modes of it look horribly bland without the details painted in: [link]
I don't suppose I could get it painted up so it looks more screen accurate, like the fully-painted version? I am clueless about Japanese model paints, and am not really good at painting to begin with... [link]

Pyramidcat In reply to MeerArtist [2012-02-04 21:19:23 +0000 UTC]
hi,
I won't be able to help you on that one, since I'm not sure how to paint the kit like that either. I work with figure resin kits mostly. I recently did a kotobukiya Model kit of Saber but I didn't enhance the kit with paint. Maybe try someone that is interested in mecha kits, since a lot of them are injection plastic instead of resin.

Pyramidcat In reply to MeerArtist [2012-02-04 22:54:00 +0000 UTC]
It was no bother, sorry I could not help you. Probably your best bet would be to search for a mecha building forum and ask someone there. Hobbyfanatics has a lot of mecha builders, so hopefully you can find someone. also maybe someone from this list [link] Sorry I can't recommend someone personally.
