She's handling her grief badly. She's refusing to acknowledge that there's a problem and she's preventing her apprentices from progressing as medicine cats.
I get that she's stressed and upset but she's a medicine cat, she needs to rise to the challenge for the sake of her clan and her apprentices.

Why are so many people hating on Leaftail? She's grieving over her lost apprentice, she had a horrifying dream of him (the one where he just turned in to a bloody mess), and she has Smallpaw as an apprentice who, no matter what Leaftail says, Smallpaw always has to offend Leaftail and point out that she's only there because Foxpaw's dead. Leaftail is like Bluestar during "A Dangerous Path." Leaftail probably feels betrayed by Starclan and doesn't trust them anymore.
Yes Leaftail is being rude to Loonpaw but Loonpaw understands why, Leaftail doesn't want to accept the fact she sent Foxpaw to Riverclan, even after Brightstar highly suggested against it, and in the end, Foxpaw died. We know Leaftail went mad because she went and killed Swampfur, then Starclan (Mousepaw) and Whitewhisker blamed Leaftail for Foxpaws death. Also, Loonpaw isn't even a Thunderclan cat, she's Riverclan, she is only there to learn herbs from Leaftail, and I personally think Leaftail has grown fond of Loonpaw and would rather send Smallpaw to Riverclan.
But who knows, maybe Leaftail is an old wench. I personally don't think so.

yes! to me she's wise and has a sharp tounge but can be gentle and affectionate. you know, she must've been very close and fond of foxpaw to grieve so much like this. oh and probably loonpaw too if she's willing to save her like she did.
i also like how she sees her faults but sadly doesn't deal with them very greatly.
