Well, in my experience, I know quite a few female longsword-fighters, some of them in my HEMA sword-fighting group, so I'll say that there are definitely quite a handful of very abled female swordfighters out there ! (also in the Esfinges group, dunno if you're familiar with it). I'm (unfortunately) not the strongest out there by a long way xD, but you don't need lots of sheer strength when it comes to some kinds of swordfighting, in my opinion, it's more about practising, agility, and gaining stamina (and I'm definitely stronger now than when I began taking classes !).
Of course, some swords and styles are heavier than others, but I think the longsword, especially in a class where not everything is about hitting harder and being the strongest , is still something that women can try, if they want to Also, regarding strength per se, the longsword is double-handed, so even though it's heavier, in a way it can be easier than the 1 kg one-handed rapier, because you get to use the strength of both arms.
On a general basis, men are in general stronger than women, yes (apart from 'biology', factors also include the fact that women don't exercise their muscles as much because it's not a traditionally 'feminine' thing to do in a gender-roled masculine society, it is thought that male and female strength was more equated in Paleolithic times). But we also should bear in mind that, apart from that general tendency, which does exist, there are stronger women and less strong men , it can all depend on each one's body, ability to exercise muscles and all that I know women who are way stronger than many men, men and women with similar strength-levels,...I'm not the strongest, like I said (most unfortunately !), and my build is pretty slim, and yet I can best some men who are stronger than me because I am more trained/more agile/similar. So it all depends And although strength comes into the equation when it comes to sword-fighting, other elements such as agility, stamina, dexterity and general practice are also very important, in my opinion, and, in many cases, actually more essential than just sheer strength What I meant to say - Female warriors ftw !
I'd love to begin with the rapier+dagger, but it's on Fridays and they're full for me, so rapier it is for now, and, in the near future, longsword as well
Thanks for the link, I think I read it a while ago, but it's nice to see it again, I love critisizing unrealistic armour

Actually I didn't know about Esfinges. I just googled it. I will take a detailed look later, but I don't have facebook, so I am sometimes off the track with that kind of things.
It is indeed about agility, technique, constant practicing, but that all isn't good enough without strength and will power. For 14 years of practicing sword fight, I have seen quite a bit. About weight of the sword, I must say, I did find sometimes easier to control two handed one, than one handed because of the using both arms. And of course, there will be at least one person who is practicing sword fight, that goes on pure strength. We had those people in our group, and almost always you go out of combat with them in bruises but you can defeat them by tiring them counting on your agility, avoiding that hits at first until they get slower.
Well thank you for the conversation. Always good to hear that other people have similar interests. And good luck with lessons! I hope someday I will be able to take archer lessons too!
