I’ve had this design in the back of my mind for quite a while, but as things go I only now got around to work on it. Since kingfishers are both very small and very colourful it was truly only a matter of time before I would dedicate a sculpture to it. I dearly love how it turned out and I love seeing the process I’ve made from bird to bird.

As all of my other birds I first blocked out the basic shape of the bird in beesputty and then painted it with acrylics in order to mimic the feathers. I’ve really been digging paint for textures lately, I like that it gives me such a different option for creating textures and I really like the outcome of it! As I wasn’t all happy about the way the environment of the hummingbird turned out, I decided to take a different route with this one and set it into a riverbed made from a special funky kinda-sorta resin kind of paint (I mixed together blue and green for this one but the blue is muchmuch more prominent here) and added a few stones and twigs to imitate a riverside.

I really liked working on birds and I’m really enjoying broadening my skillset with this miniatures. I’m also thinking I’d like to work more in terms of little collections as opposed to stand-alone designs. They will still wokr as individual pieces, but I’m just noticing that when I’m working, my mind tends to drift to other projects that are kind of in the same realm and I’d like to lean into that a bit more instead of abandoning those ideas because i’d like to have more variation.
