Description Caption: Flattery will get you........ pretty far, actually.

Decided to try a render of Bastion... I'm not good with clothes, and he doesn't tend to wear much... so it works for me. Plus, I figure his fangirls will like it.

I debated making his cheeks rounder, or widening the bridge of his nose at the top to more closely match thesilentrose's pictures, but if I futz with it any further I'll probably just mess it up.

Bastion is the intellectual property of his creator (which is not me).

I think the original character is inspired by a blood elf so that's pretty accurate.

Hehe, thanks... maybe I'll eventually get around to doing some of the other characters, right now I'm distracted by RL and my Squiby projects, though...

Yowza. Did you do this with a 3D program? You said render but I've never seen anything like poser look this good. Not in a million years could poser do this. Please tell me you didn't use poser. It looks too natural and polished to be a poser render.

It's definitely Poser, Poser 7 to be precise... the model is Michael 4, with some custom morphing and alot of tweaking the material nodes to get the skin just right.

However, I did use Gimp to smooth out any render errors and also painted most of the hair, and all of the beard, by hand.

Ah! Well I bow to your proficiency as a poser user. Usually what I see by others is crud so my general opinion of the program is pretty low. Every so often I do see something that wow's me. But sadly there's so many people that think you can just pose a model in 3D and not put in any real effort into it. So that's why at first I didn't think yours was poser. But in yours I can see the effort.

Well thanks. With programs like Poser, yeah someone new to it can just take a stock model and put it in a stock pose with stock lighting, and hit the render button and think it looks good, but it won't be impressive.

But there's a whole lot more to it... I've been at it for around four years now and I still haven't mastered everything. Texture and material editing are what I think I'm best at so far, and morphing... I like it when I'm done with a model and it's hard to tell what the original model was anymore.

If you look at Jigger WIP in my scraps folder for example, the main figure there was a female model before I got through with it.

And Alchemist's Assistant in my main gallery is an example of playing with materials... the marble tabletop was created entirely using reflection and a custom map and the wand and crystal ball use fresnel refraction, which a lot of Poser users never touch.

And the dynamic cloth function is something even I've barely scratched and it's absolutely fantastic for dragon's wings.

All in all it's a complex program that often only gets maybe 10% of its function fully used.

I will check those things out. Poser is interesting to me as a drawing tool. My friend told me of a method to help with figure drawing by posing a model and then tracing over it. I have old version (version 4) and I'm not sure how serious I plan to get with it. But as a drawing tool it seems pretty useful. Some artists search 100's of stock photos looking for a pose they can use as a reference but if you can pose something in poser then you can virtually have a pose reference of any pose you want. It's just a matter of learning the controls and settings. Stuff like materials I don't really need to know about since I plan to draw the rest of the character myself. Though it is interesting nonetheless and I love seeing the work of people that know their stuff.
