Description Part of the ongoing art trade between and myself. Even if that art trade doesn't always involve just our own characters, it works b/c we're always harassing each other to do more

Anyway, she's doing a set of tarot cards, and said she didn't mind if I took some elements of the tarot themselves. B/c my previous idea kind of fizzled out and I got stuck in a rut, so now I'm starting them over. B/c I do that, apparently

Kate represents Justice, and she will do anything for it. She might not always like being in the Wardens, but that won't stop her from honoring her oath and doing what the Commander requires of her. And in between, she spends her time scaring the men of Soldier's Peak, sparring, and making witty responses. She's also not above throwing her daggers at you if you dare to wake her up. Kate values her sleep.

Kate Nallos is the brain child of and belongs to the Soldier's Peak RP

I also owe a big thanks to elfkin for redlining the original and pointing out the problems with her arms.

I told you this before but I adore this. it feels crisp and lovely, it makes her look strong, harsh and cutting. Like a tool or someone who does whatever needs to be done. I adore it beyond words. Thank you, sweetie :*

i was gonna say it looks a little symbolic... then i read it's for a tarot set.Β  see, that makes sense!Β  cool!

you look more confident with your hands in this one; they look really good!Β  and the cloth and tree background looks ambitious, too.Β  (of course, i haven't been stopping by deviant art for a few months, so i might just be behind the times.)

on her right arm... the foreshortening on the forearm didn't work out too well.Β  i think you need much more circular circles for her bracer.Β  and maybe for the upper arm to overlap the edge of the bracer a bit.Β  if you look at the reference, the upper arm overlaps in front of the forearm.Β  your style is flatter than that by nature, but the circles could enhance the depth right there.

Thank you hun! No, I haven't been updating as much b/c life and all that.. but I've been practicing! :]

I see exactly what you mean about the arms. I was feeling like it wasn't working out so well, but I could not for the life of me figure out what it was <.< But I think you hit the nail on the head, so to speak, with the circles. B/c I didn't even think of that! Thank you so much for pointing that out to me :] It also taught me that I really need to practice foreshortening XD

i don't know if you've seen the tutorial/methods that break down the body into primitive shapes -- spheres, cylinders, boxes and the like.Β  the limbs of course, get cylinders.Β  if you practice (or just look at) like cans and bottles, and pay attention to the ends, you can see how the flat line from the side turns into an ellipse as you tilt it, and the ellipses become more circular until you're looking at it from the end, and they're full circles.

same deal with the limbs and stuff. : )

I love the trees, too! The patterns and shading are just beautiful. Kate is gorgeous, as always, and I really like the intricate hilts on her swords.

eee! Thank you sweetie

Btw, I haven't forgotten that I owe you a Braonan picture. My muse is being a pain, so I'm trying to go with what she wants right now, build up some brownie points and all that, and then get to work on everything I owe

Oh, please don't stress about it at all! My muse is the most fickle of creatures, so I most certainly understand.

What Champ said about the treesβ€”I love the way they're shaded, particularly against the swatches of cooler colours in the farther background. And as odd as it may sound, I love Kate's pants! The folds and shading are spectacular. So gorgeousβ€”her hair, her expression, everything!Β

eee, thank you sweetie!

Its the water brush in Sai. I played around with all the different brushes and I really like it. I'm still learning how to use everything, but I really like the look a lot of the brushes give

You say it takes you longer to do these, well it is so worth the wait (not that there is any, really). This looks different from what you've done so far, yet recognisably your work. So beautiful; I love her noble expression and her clothes and those swords...wow. Oddly though I can't get over the way you've coloured the trees. Gorgeous!

It is a bit different. I bought Paint Tool Sai and was playing around with the linework layers which... omg they make everything so neat and pretty o.o I'm in love. Seriously.

The trees actually spawned from random scribbles XD I always have a difficult time trying to figure out how to shade them, and I started randomly scribbling spots to see how it looked, and I kind of liked it. Then I was like 'huh, I wonder if I can just keep building on this' and it went from there LOL

Also, idk if you noticed the leaves, but there are 11. B/c the card is the 11th. Which has nothing to do with my comment, but I put in a lot of symbolism that I'm proud of XD

Thank you so much sweetie

I've heard a lot about how great Paint Tool is. That and Manga Studio as the brushes for the software I use are really basic and there's next to no support for the tool (unless you're in Japan). But then I think it's a case of working on making my linework neater, rather than finding something that does it for me

Ah ha. I counted the leaves. I had to, hee hee.

True, and that's why it took me so long to finally cave and buy Sai. B/c I thought 'I think I need to work on this myself'. And it did help; I read a lot of different artists who suggested drawing on a huge canvas and then making it smaller to help neaten up the lineart, and that does help a lot too. The thing that I'm liking about Sai is that if you work on a linework layer, you can adjust each individual line. You can shift them, change the size, everything. But, I do know a lot of people that aren't interested in it. Its whatever works for you

ahahaha yay! I'm glad someone did.

I've been working my way through my 'How to Draw Manga' tome as well as a couple of other resources and it keeps reminding me what a long, long way I have to go. On the other hand, I'm quite happy to keep learning And, be amazed at how incredible your artwork is becoming. Or I should say, keeps getting!

That's how I get. The more I learn, the more I discover how much I need to learn. Its a never ending spiral, I tell you

awww, thank you sweetie
