‘Tough times call for rough decisions,’ Hank thought as she stared across at the cowboys standing over the injured heifer. She paced next to her horse, taking her hat off and running her fingers through her hair before placing it back on her head. As one of the cowboys turned away from the cow and walked back to her, she bit her lip.“How does she look?” Hank asked.
Justin wouldn’t lift his eyes from the ground. “She’s suffering.”
Hank silently walked over and squatted by the heifer. She stroked the soft hide on the cow’s face. The heifer looked at her and mooed loudly.
Justin stood behind her. “It’s your call, Hoss.”
With a nod and a tight grimace glued on her face, Hank drew her pistols.
