Description I've been thinking about ritual tussles in theropods a lot recently, partially as a method for helping break myself out of the rut of showy violence that theropod photos nearly always seem to default to. After watching some videos of wrestling Komodo dragons, I thought about Torvosaurus, which have big, bulky arms perfect for grappling with. The result is two males getting into a somewhat awkward grappling match. The one on the right, as you can see, has bitten off a little more than he can chew. It's going to be a short bout.

I've been having some tablet problems, so this will have to remain uncolored for the foreseeable future, alas.

Absolutely beautiful. I can't believe that I hadn't seen your work until now. Great sense of movement in this piece, and I like your relation to Komodo dragons that you made with these Torvosaurus.

I noticed in your description that you were having some drawing tablet problems that were preventing you from colouring this. How would you feel if I asked to colour it for you? I'd give you full credit, of course, and wouldn't use it for any personal profit. What do you think?
If you prefer not, I completely understand. Thank you for your time!

And, thank for featuring this in your journal, Paleona !

Thanks for the compliment! I've really loved your color work for a while as well. I'd be more than happy to see what you came up with here. Have at it and drop me a line when you've finished!

Love it!  The spines are a great touch, and your anatomy looks really lovely.  I hope you get your tablet back in working order, so we can see what colors you have planned for it!  The pencils lines are really beautiful by themselves, too, honestly.

Thank you kindly! I'm actually quite fond of how clean this looks, and I'm planning on mostly using flat colors for it if I ever get around to it.

Makes a lot of sense for them to evade wounds as much as possible.

By the way, have you ready my PA project? If so, what do you think?

Awesome! I've imagined this sort of combat and hoping to restore it with one particular theropod for quite some time now...

Ever since the discovery of the new Spinosaurus remains I've thought about restoring them and their relatives in this combative likeness. However, the aesthetics are very difficult to illustrate in this manner...

I'm always glad to see more non-lethal combat between theropods. It's all too easy to forget that most conflict between them would end far before any serious damage was done. Monitor-style wrestling suits Torvosaurus very well, really loving this.

The original idea was Abelisaurids, but it just seemed a bit too ungainly of an activity for those odd beasties. When I watched a video of Komodo Dragons going at it the lightbulb went on in my head.

I could see abelisaurs doing a modified version of this sort of combat, though I imagine their heads were the main weapon when fighting. All that knobbly facial tissue and, in the case of Carnotaurus, horns must've been for something!

I think Majungosaurus, with its little legs and low-slung body, might have been another good genus to try this with.

I could see them using a modified version of this where they try to drape their body over their competitor, effectively pinning them.
