The Night Circus
Prologue : Tonight

The circus is there, and yesterday it was not.

As the gossip that passed each citizen in the city says, the circus has been built near the forest on the suburb, just some thousand meters from the city. Circus that is well-known without flyers, announcement, advertising posters, or even internet posts, is being a hot topic in the city in some hours. The people in the city have talked about this all the day. It seems that the news which is delivered by the words of mouth is more effective, believable, and preferable, than just a print of words. It leads the circus that’s appeared in no particular time before today goes so infamous.

The circus that stands with uncountable tents, so many game stalls, and plenty food stalls has rather very quiet, monochromatic situation. The towering tents have black-white strips to color the cloth, instead the gold and crimson one. The fences are wooden boards that painted silver and the banners are held by gold-painted iron pipes. Monochromatic, but colored, and it is really interesting.

But it isn’t open for business. The circus hasn’t opened yet.

Because the curiosity goes better, people come to the circus in the afternoon, and what they find is the gate that’s made from the iron that painted black is blocked with the wooden boards which are nailed each other. There is one particular white wooden board that is nailed in the front, and it has the printed words on it. It reads:

Open at Nightfall
Close at Dawn

“What kind of circus that only opens at night?” the question comes quickly, and it never gets an answer. As saying that, the people go back to the city, waiting for the nightfall comes. When it comes, almost the curious people in the city walk to that place together, even the small road path crowded with people. They happily chatter and whisper each other to their acquaintance, discussing what will the circus show to their audience.

You are one of those curious people. With your classmates that challenge each other to bear their fatigue for a week and watch the circus until the dawn, you walk to the circus and sometimes join the discussion with a flashlight, your phone, and some money in the purse that stashed in your simple, little bag.

As you and your classmate come to the circus, the bulbs of light haven’t been lightened, no shadow can be seen, and no activity in happens in your sight. It is a dead silence in the circus.

“Is… the circus not open?” comes from some of the people, and even from your friend. “Is it a prank?” they question each other, and some of them already decide to leave the circus, even your classmates. You are almost the one who still stay there, because your curiosity about the circus.

Suddenly, a sudden light come when you look to the crowd that leaving. It makes your face tilts to the source of light. It is a collection of bulbs that makes a letter “W”, that flickers many times until it stays still. Other bulbs flicker many times, from “O” until “S”. And it forms a sentence.

The World’s Tour Circus

The ticket booth lightens, and the white board in front of the separating glass says “Open”, and a hand seems handing a monochromatic ticket with a world map is printed on to no one particular. Because you are the one who is standing really near to that stall, you are tempted to take that ticket and pay immediately. When you really take that and give the money, the money isn’t taken by the ticket seller.

“It is for you, free.” The undefined gender’s sound says, making you happy since you don’t have to pay. You thank whoever it is, but since there isn’t any response, you leave the booth as the others seem noticing the circus is open.

Your eyes look to the gate, which seems has been opened by automatic technology. You see the colorful lights from the inside of the circus, from the stalls or the tents.

Now, the circus is open.

You may enter, and enjoy the circus.
