Well I am a big fan of Illyria from the former show Angel, and I just joined an Illryria Fan Club So to celebrate my joining I thought I would attempt to draw her. I used quite a small ref picture, a whole lot smaller than I am used to so certain dimensions and aspects could be off >_<
This one took me a little while as I had so much school work to do recently that I could only do little bits and pieces. So overall I don't really have a time so I can only guesstimate around 8 hours or so. I used mech pencils and used an HB, 3B, 6B and 7B, on printer paper like usual. And I also used a cotton tip for the shading!

Alright I'll take a moment here and drop my 2 cents on this, even though it'll probably be pointless cuz everyone has already given you such wonderful praise. But..whatev!
For starters I think not doing her in the typical blue motif was a very bold move and I find that really cool that you were willing to try something different or experiment with different effects. I think alot of artists get stuck within a certain set of parematers(sp?) and they are afraid to go beyond the norm of what they typically do. Yet in a sense it's as if you brought her out of her norm style and put her in your's or pencil life drawing or portraits. So I dunno if my praise for trying something new...really applies to you. Either way it's still cool and you pulled it off well.
As far as the actual work, I think the hair looks wonderful and the shading was done well in that section. Of course J and her shading...as if it's ever really bad, but seriously the best that you did it on was actually the face. The facial structures you made for her were strikingly subtle, and that is so kick ass yo! good job girl
Can't really say much about her clothes as you don't have alot of area on the canvas, and the BG is empty with a solid black palette...kinda boring but we all know this is a spotlight effect so it's acceptable in this example ONLY. The lips are gorgeous though, and the texture you added there is amazing, I'd make out with this chick^^. * runs n' hides * 
There really is only one thing about this that I'd change. HER left eye, the pupil. The colored sections are fine, but the black in the middle is not equal on both sides. N' yes I understand she's at an angle, but still I can tell it's off. It's just not the right size...IMO!! You might disagree, but the left one looks just a scoche smaller. You'd have to stare at her to notice that though, but then again she is some fucked up chick by your description so if that is the way her eyes are supposed to be...one smaller than the other, than fine.

Yeah I dunno if I went against the norm cause I always draw them without colour, lol. I don't know if I even could, maybe cause I am too lazy. Same for the background, I couldn't be buggered, so I just threw the black in there to fit up the ugly white space.

Well I'm sorry if you object to my critique, or if you're offended by it. I don't think I focus on the smallest details, I tend to believe that I look at the big picture in things. Therefore on a piece of art like this, it's not that I'm focusing on but one simple thing, but I see everything. It's not like I said it's fucking horrid or something, but the eye is noticeable. I believe you that you didn't pay any attention, you've done this same thing before I'm pretty sure. Like I said it's good work, and the black was for the highlight I understand that, I'd just modify the pupil if it was me.
It's ironic the first art I ever seen of yours there was a colored chibi style character, unless I have you confused with someone else, which I'm sure I don't. N' it seemed aside from that and a few pieces here or there you don't do color much. That's ok, it's no big deal either way. I agree with other's assesment on this that it's cool you didn't do it in color like it's been done that way so many times before.
