I'm just asking because in Italian it's spiGa, so your word may derive from Latin

This is not Spiga in Italian or Spica in Latin. This is SpiCa in English.

I thought it was a Russian word... well it's the same, spica derives from Latin: ORIGIN late 17th cent.: from Latin, literally ‘spike, ear of corn’ ; related to spina ‘spine.’
