Description
Another portrait hahaim trying to color skin better and its really hard to go for that realism effect
i should probably try that thing where i color in layers but since im lazy thats not happening anytime soon haha i will try though

What strikes me in this portrait is how all the vibrant colours used still feel natural with each other.
Also, I like how there is very much light and contrast going on but you did not get seducted
into the use of black
The eyes are piercing but I think you could even get a more piercing effect when the blue of her
collar/scarf would not be so bright.
You said trying to go for a realistic effect, and the shades and light are well done.
They seem to be all in place and make sense
I already said the bright colours feel natural but all the contrast they make with each other give
a very busy, intense feel.
This is because of all the contrasts going on and them fighting to get the attention.
It is hard to work with layers using pencils, especially the coloured ones.
Easy to make things muffled and dirty
So I get how all the strong colours came to be.
But when thinking about realism;
What catches the light gets to be bright
Shades are not very saturated.
So you could use a bit less vivid colours to put down the darkers shaded parts and
use the bright ones to make certain parts pop
You'd still have the contrasting colours going on.
Also, and this is about using a tiny bit of layering tho;
Colours tend to reflect on their environment so a tiny bit of that bright orange/yellow of the hair could
be cast on the scarf for example.
Just a little soft touch of it
Now, this person seems to me to be a female but is quite androgen.
S(he) has this graceful pair of eyebrows and high cheekbones.
Hair swept to the back
That makes me think s(he)'d be female.
On the other hand there is a thin mouth and strong jaw which are generally more male kinda features.
So I am not sure about the gender really.
Maybe you didn't want us to be
But if you did then those are some parts that make me wonder.
Overall, I think you did a great job
It is an intriguing portrait.
Nice shading and light.

This is a really nicely shaded piece!! The colours are very nice and the use of white of the paper for highlight works well here, especially the use of pinks and other colours to replicate the different colours in human skin. I admire how you’ve shaded the scarf! I struggle with clothing folds myself, so this is super cool (I’m a little jealous).
However, the background the hair are somewhat bothering. This may be personal opinions, but the background clashes with the pink in the face. I think a cooler colour such as green would look better, letting the face standout more. The hair doesn’t appear to fall naturally? The shape is really well done, but the strands themselves seem very stiff and in place – as if he’s a wig. I think if they overlapped and were a little weighed it would appear more natural.
Overall very nice portrait!! It’s rare to see realism with coloured pencils, so I think you did a very good job J
