Colchis would be in modern day Georgia. The Greeks also thought it was the homeland of the Amazons. Herodotus also (mistakenly) equated them with the Egyptians since they supposedly practiced circumcision.

Later on, the Greeks were colonizing the area. Colchis fell just outside Alexander the Great's conquered territories, but was snatched up after that by the Romans. It was also subject to Persian rule for a bit too.))
