Calcifer stood in his office, leaning heavily on the corner of his desk in thought. His children, one raised in darkness, the other in love. How different they were. He never should have allowed Constance to take Ed. He could not have known her soul had been so pure before. So loving when he had married her.
His daughter, poor Elsbeth, no she wasn't poor, he had loved her from the moment she was born. Constance had cast her aside when they showed the baby to her, cloven hooves and wet deformed wings. But Calcifer had adored the baby. Edward had been born nearly dead, but he was human. So human seeming. Constance had clung to him for dear life, terrified of her daughter.
She left the hospital after he had revealed the truth to her. He wasn't human. Never had been. Never would be. No, he was a fallen angel, a beast cast into the earth as punishment from on high. He had revealed his true name to her afterwards she fled with Edward, leaving her first born daughter with him.
Constance had screamed that little Elsbeth was evil, a demon. She was only partially right. If only she'd known... If only.
Calcifer shook his head free of memories of the past. It had been so long ago, years. Elsbeth was raised happily, with fine training and lessons. Her powers had only just manifested a few years ago. that had been when the nightmares had begun as well.
Their minds made the connection, Edward's through stress, Elsbeth's through concern. Calcifer's mind rolled over the nights he had consoled his only daughter from the horrors of Constance. He had even tried to block the link. But a sister's love and a brother's need were too strong, even for him.
He caved when she learned to control her abilities. Disguising herself as human so they wouldn't hurt her, fly with the telekenetic powers she had and most of all to control the darkness that loomed ever in her heart. She had learned it all, and quite well.
He gave his blessing for her to retrieve her brother.
Edward, the boy's mind was shattered into a million pieces from that woman's constant brain washing. He needed love, and tenderness.
Calcifer straightened up, pulling his shoulders straight. As the last rays of sunlight vanished on the horizon, his office took on an entirely different feel. The fireplace lit automatically, fresh light flickering over the moulded mantle and the carved desk. shadows danced over the carpet as though alive and Calcifer carefully folded his hands at the small of his back, gazing into the abyss of the city below.
His children were home now, and he would do whatever it took to ensure this world was their's someday.
The fire spat embers in it's confines, smacking the iron screen with tiny hisses. A long shadow fell over the office then, wide spiriling horns atop the broad-shouldered form of a man.
Yes, his children would continue on in this world.
