Trying out my new toned tan sketchbook. I only used two colors, black and white. I never drew feathers, so that was new. I love these creatures, so I will probably do a few more in the future.This eagle was inspired by a (smaller) eagle in the fields sitting on a branch. He looked kind of lonely.

The details turned out very nice, and the eyes are very intense. Strangely I imagine to see a hint of blue there, even though you wrote you only used black and whiteΒ Β

Yes, it is indeed only black and white, but it not only on the photograph, but also in RL people tend to see blue into it. You are not the only one! Maybe because I used the white first, second layer a bit of black and than added white again in the toplayer (in the eye).

I did a quick check on the color, there is actually a good amount of blue in it. Maybe the black pencil contains actually some blue pigments, but since the white pen also shows a distinct blue hue, it may be either the camera sensor or the lighting...

You got me interested in the lighting and colors!
Originally, I photographed it inside the house on an overcast day. I tried again this afternoon (same place, but now a sunny day). When I colorpick, grey yellows and greens turns up. Hmm. I really have to think about when and how I photograph! It has a big effect on the color. I think that the toned paper probably also brings out certain colors. Thank you for your sharp eye Β

The eye is the first thing I started on after the initial sketch. There is a saying 'the eyes are windows to the soul', I love drawing them!

Eyes are my favorite feature to draw for both animal and human faces, both realistic style or anime. ^^
