Description Resent sketches of Snap the wolfdog. I wanted to make her look more natural and mature. So I dulled her colours, added some dark markings on her face and worked on her proportions a bit.

I see that many people who meet Snap for the first time mistake her for male. I guess it's my fault since I don't put much effort in sexual dimorphism... Well, actually she looks like female in my opinion. Within dog standards. I mean, I don't want to add eyelashes or make her look 'smooth'. I'm pretty happy with how Snap is - a shaggy youngster with big eyes and light body.

Beautiful smooth anatomy.

Just a question: if you suddenly became inspired to draw a coyote and a golden jackal, how would you approach differentiating them? Some artists can't tell the difference between them.

That's an interesting question! I've never thought about drawing them in comparison to each other, but I might do that just to test my skills.

I also though it was a male, sorry

I like very much her semirealistic design and yes you're right she doesn't need eyelashes or thinks like that it would take away her semirealistic apperience I understand you completely, that's the same I though with my own fursona
Out of the shadows...

Its ok if I draw them together sometime?
It would be interesting see the tundra wolf and the forest wolfdog together

I guess I draw my wolves genderly neutral, so the only way to find out who is who is to ask

Your character looks really appealing. I like that she looks strong built, also her check fur seems to be really soft.
Yes, it’s completely okay!

Yes thats because she Is a Tundra X Gray wolf mix.
What breed Is Snap?
Do you have any aproximate size for her?
(Yo use as refference)

Snap was based on Czech vlcak, though she has rounder ears and darker pelt. She is to be the size of German shepherd.
I’m curious to see your interpretation

Hello!

I don’t mind that, though I would recommend to pay more attention to the original - I mean, real life animals I was actually inspired by Instagram wolfdog profile, and I referenced photos before making these sketches.

How do you colour underneath the pencil sketch??

Did ya scan it and ?? wha?? D:

Also she looks female, I wouldn't mistake her for a male tbh. I love how she can make many recognizable expressions <3

Yep, I scan my drawing, clean them in PS, create a layer above and set it’s mode to Multiply. Then I do the colours in SAI.

Wvvv...she looks more and more refined I also like to see the drawings you make are getting more and more realistic
The sitting position made me "woow", my dog looks sort of like that when we make him sit on the sofa xDD
At first I also thought she was a male, and I always think of Tsap as 'he', though now she looks so femine to me, maybe a bit 'spunky and mischievous'? I can see how graceful she is now
I like how you've darkened her colours, but for some reason I prefer her former colours, maybe because that makes her look younger? But I like the dark markings on her face very much
And I don't like draw eyelashes on animals too, maybe because it makes them look like cartoonish. xDD
Always "Отличная Работа" to you and keep on drawing!

Thank you very much!

I actually though that sitting g position was one of most unrealistic here. But well, I guess dogs can do variety of poses

I try to make my animals stylized, but still natural

She definitely looks female to me! The facial structure and proportions of the body both imply it quite well.

ShigureTheProtector [2018-07-24 13:51:54 +0000 UTC]

I've always seen her as a female, though I do get the confusion in some people. Its kinda difficult for me to tell the difference between male and female animals in real life, especially large canines, unless its something obvious (lions having manes and lionesses not having manes, men have flat chests while women have more pronounced breasts, their facial or body structures, etc) or when you have fictional canine characters that are anthropomorphisized in a way to show the difference (and I don't just mean the "walking on two legs wearing clothes" side, since everyone nowadays seems to think that's the only way an animal character can be "anthropomorphic"), like if they have more pronounced eyelashes or more female-looking hair on their heads for example. Though I don't tend to give my female characters super-'girly' eyelashes or human hair, since I'm not really a fan of that kind of style. Plus they already have hair (or fur) all over their bodies so there's no point in giving them more. And if I do give them lashes, I don't go over-the-top with 'em. XD

The high level of realism is a solid feature in all of these drawings. Her colors have a nice coherent unity to them, and the poses are all so lifelike and varied.
