Description why draw many details when you can only draw many shades of colors?

though I have the feeling it lacks something! like dunno, a mist, a breeze or anything else! if you have any idea, share it!

Mmm I get what you mean! It's true the splendor/colours of the background clashes with the soft, calm-looking woman! That's because most of the time I don't know what I'm doing! my drawings are very experimental!
You're right, maybe a neutral colour like white could have mix them with more harmony! Thank you!

This is amazing!! I really love the colors and how well they blend together, especially with the backgrounds! May I ask what kind of colored pencils did you use?

merccciiiiii beaucoup!   (ça fait plaisir de te revoir par ici! même si c'est un p'tit passage rapide! ) haha je pense faire ça plus souvent alors, y a moins de détails mais plus de couleurs, et ça prend moins de temps! (enfin, "moins")

Dude the details here are unbelievable Especially the textures on the gold! They don't look like just watercolour - did you use some kind of special pen for those? Also you're getting really, really good at flowing hair and folds in cloth!

The clouds kind of look too solid, but the colours are awesome. I think for next time you should soften their outlines a bit more.

As for it lacking something, I think it needs something more to ground the girl into the background. Maybe stronger lighting? Judging by the colours of the clouds, there should be golden and purple sunlight on to the character as well. Skin actually reflects faint hues of the colours around it.

Asterpillar In reply to my-sword-is-bigger [2017-02-05 10:48:34 +0000 UTC]

Thank you sooo much! weirdly to me this one is quite simple, but alllllll the shades of colours are doing the work of awesomeness!

ah I will answer in a raw, because the fact it doesn't look like watercolors is linked to the fact it looks more solid as you say!
you're right, the basis is watercolors, but I used coloured pencils to soften the thing! (or at least I tried! )
I don't know what's wrong with my watercolors lately but the result is plain ugly! the pencils make it look better! if i wouldn't have used them here, it would have been bland and direction-the-trash-can!

ha I will confess my biggest shame and incompetence! to play with the light/background on the character, I tried it many time! make it look yellowish at night, bluer in the sea, but it failed! you must know you can't suppress something on traditionnal when the damage is done!
I'm trying to practice, but seeing the huge amount of drawings failed because of that, it's decouraging!

(well thank you for the tip anyway! )

You're very welcome!

I see! Maybe you've changed technique without even noticing it.

Have you tried using references? If you put a photo on GIMP and use the colour pickers, you'll be able to see what colours are actually on a person. Sometimes you won't expect it, but in certain backgrounds the skin is actually green, although it doesn't look green in the picture because the background is greener - if you know what I mean?
You should practice with sketches, that way you can experiment more without feeling like you ruined a picture! Or maybe even draw an outline and photocopy it, and experiment with colours there? xD

(Of course! )

Asterpillar In reply to my-sword-is-bigger [2017-02-06 11:08:59 +0000 UTC]

surely, it changes everytime!

yes I see what you mean, it's often surprising! maybe I should give up with watercolors too, because I like to put looooot of different shades for the contrast, but the paper is giving up too quickly! xD how do professionnals do?
I tried both: sketches and official, but yes, training is the key to success! no choice!

nuuu no printer! anyway with watercolors you need thick paper, not sure it can go in! XD that's it, watercolors are a pain!

my-sword-is-bigger In reply to Asterpillar [2017-08-02 12:04:22 +0000 UTC]

I think professionals must know the colour they need to do and they use that colour in the first place, rather than adding shades on like the rest of us peasants.
Training and observance

Hm, then get a piece of glass and trace several versions before you experiment! I have a glass dinner table and when I need to trace I just stick a lamp underneath.
