Description M31 Galaxy
Nikon D70, 135mm/2.8 and some postprocessing (more on my homepage ).

The Andromeda Galaxy M31 is part of the local group of Galaxies, sort of our next door neighbour in the Universe. Though it is some 2.5 million lightyears away, the galaxy can easiely be seen with the naked eye in a dark night. M31 is slightly larger than our own Milkyway, that's why you might call it our "Big Brother".

Despite the light pollution you've got pretty good detail. What mount do you use?

Thanks!
I mounted my camera piggy back on the mount of the local observatory in Aachen (I used to work there as a freelanced guide).

beautiful! I assume the coloring happens in post processing, right?

Thanks.
I am afraid, the sky over Aachen (where I shot it) was very light polluted. Turning donw the Sodium-Yellow, made the shot slightly blueish. But I sort of like that look, though it is not scientifically accurate.

Where'd you take this shot from and what settings did you use?

I took this shot in Aachen, Germany.
I used a Nikon D70 and a manual 135mm/2.8 lens. It's actually an addition of 16 exposures, 2min each.

Wow, only 135mm and you were that zoomed or did you crop?

It is definetely a crop of the original. I have no idea how much I cut away, as this is a couple of years ago. I will check and add the info to the image.

Hey Dude

I just had a look at the original, my crop shows a quarter of the original field of view (half of the length, and half of the width).

Ahhh, M31. Give it a while and it'll join up with our galaxy.

Great shot though

Yea, that'll be a great sight once it merges with the Milkyway. 2E9 Years to wait though.

Heh, only a short wait...
