Anyone that has followed my tumblr know about my current DB/DBZ kick lately. I forgot how much it has influenced my art and some of its remnants can still be seen in it both style and story. Decide to draw my two favorite characters (Trunks is also my fave) Piccolo and Gohan...before Gohan got lame-ified in the Buu saga -__-Piccolo, Gohan © Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball Z

This has always been my favorite part of the entire DBZ episodes. Villainous mentors are the best. I wish there were more stories about these guys. (Though I also enjoyed the short scenes with Piccolo interracting with Gohan's future wife.)
I love the beautiful lights in this, the dusk atmosphere and everything. I also find it charming how Gohan is wearing Piccolo's... turban-helmet thing. And a self-made cape that represents his. xD I remember Gohan asking for his mentor's outfit before he fought against Cell, and thought it was the coolest thing to honor this Piccolo's lessons.
Also, I like the poses you chose for the two, and the facial expressions. And the ironic title.
This fanart is a nice nostalgia trip for me.

It's been pretty inconsistent in the manga he has 4 but in the anime it's 5. Same thing with his blood, earlier anime it was red and then later purple @.@

Oh, awesome! Dude! I mean this should be an obvious common thing for people to do, but I LOVE that you've applied your own style to these characters instead of trying to copy the show or manga's style like most people do. You can still tell they're the same characters, but done in your style, which I really want to see more of. Now I gotta see a Vegeta and Goku picture. xD

Everything went down the drain after Frieza and Namek, really, since that's where Toriyama wanted to stop DBZ originally. Excellent work though.

Yet the Cell saga is still my favorite. I think Toriyama was at least able to roll with it there, and afterward Gohan should have become the main character like he originally wanted anyway. It was perfectly set up for that, and Gohan really proves himself, which is largely why I like that saga so much.
Wait, scratch that, the Chrono Trigger saga was my favorite... wait.

I also liked to think over what DBZ would have been like if Akira was able to go the route he wanted and have Gohan take the role of protagonist (his plan after Cell was for Goku to pass the torch onto Gohan).

Actually, the entirety of Dragonball Z was Akira Toriyama attempting (and failing) to shift the hero focus from Goku to his offspring. Goku was originally supposed to die on Namek when it exploded, passing the torch to Gohan. But all people wanted was more Goku (and more of the Super Saiyan-y awesomeness that came with him, which is why nobody remembers that Garlic Junior arc). So they brought him back, only for the events of the Cell saga to take place, where Goku died again and Gohan actually surpassed him and killed cell himself, setting him up to be Earth's greatest defender, like you said. And I think the plan with the Buu Saga was originally for Goten to be the hero who defeated Buu, and we all know how that turned out.

From what I heard he thought the Cell Saga would FINALLY be that chance...but editors demanded they find a way to bring Goku bakc.

Yeah, same here, although I like Buu as a character that saga ruined Gohan for me, hell it made the others even more useless. They really should have went with his original plan, the entire series was building up for Gohan to take Goku's place properly.

One thing I imagined is maybe he helped teach Trunks a bit (not sure if Gotenks would exist in my mind) and actually gives him the old sword he had during his training with Piccolo.
