Hooray! I'm so glad they arrived safe, and are loved in their new home So appreciate all your kind words.
Thank you for shopping with me, and for leaving such an awesome feedback on Etsy

(I'm anxious about precious babies in the post these days, because the goodies I sent off for the "Love Yourself For Art" contest never arrived Blasted post office. So it's always a massive relief when I hear of happy arrivals.)

Those are simply gorgeous! I am curious, how much does one like that weigh? Just like glass, or heavier?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Athalour In reply to Exillior [2010-03-30 14:22:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much, honey!
Because they're so tiny, they're fairly light. The big beads can get quite heavy, though.

I see! I've always wondered about their weight - they look... so majestic. And yet so tiny!

these are incredible! I am so amazed at your skill, how long does it take to make one of these? what's the process? Gorgeous Vic!

Athalour In reply to claudiamm37 [2010-03-21 21:25:48 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much, hon!

Long and incoherent explanation alert....

These little guys can be a bit tricky, and need to be made before (BEFORE, I tells ye) the third cup of coffee of the day
Essentially they involve making twisties and/or stringers in various colours for the foliage (twisties are kinda like twisted candy canes of assorted colours of glass), and a special stringer for the trunk (stringer = a thin rod of glass. The ones I make for the trunks are dark ivory glass, rolled in silver leaf, encased in clear glass, then pulled into a stringer - it's like pulling taffy!)
After making obscene amounts of stringers and twisties, and valiantly resisting too much caffeine (or me hands, they do shake):
1) Make a flat or lentil shaped base bead in colour of choice
2) "Draw" a trunk and branches onto the base bead with stringer, being careful to leave them raised, while still fused to the base bead, also being careful not to let the whole creation get too cold in the process...
3) Add some foliage, with twistie or stringers of your choice
4) Repeat on other side of base bead
5) Admire, anneal, enjoy

Hope that made sense? Do tell me if it was totally incomprehensible

OMG! I can't believe what you do!!! It certainly looks like all that you described, but its the idea of it...you are a true artist my Dear! the thought, the process and the outcome, prove it!

Athalour In reply to claudiamm37 [2010-03-24 11:58:41 +0000 UTC]

Aww, now I'm blushing
I'm glad I put off trying these until I had some experience with glass. They're not that difficult, really (at least, not compared to things like the Sea Life series), they just need serious heat control and a lot of patience My first ones were uuuuuuugly

pretty what colors do you use for your trunks ?

Athalour In reply to obscure-shadow [2010-03-21 20:23:46 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I use encased silvered ivory stringer - it's wonderful for trunks, and if you pull it reeeeeally thin, it's nice to include as vines in floral beads as well

Oh, wow! I really like these! Especially the pinkish one in the top left corner. It makes me think of the Cherry Blossom Festival (which I believe is coming up soon~) or the Cherry Blossom trees in Okami. Seriously, these look so cool!

Thanks so much! They work nicely together, methinks. It would be nice if someone bought them all together

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wynnesome In reply to Athalour [2010-03-21 23:18:38 +0000 UTC]

That would be neat. Didn't the description say only three of them are for sale though? Or just hoping to sell the trio together? You could always just offer them as a set that way!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Athalour In reply to wynnesome [2010-03-22 09:30:16 +0000 UTC]

Alas, yes, I'm only selling three - I chipped the purple one while I was setting it, so can't sell it Well, it would be cool if they all went off together - but just as cool if they sold separately. As long as they sell.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wynnesome In reply to Athalour [2010-03-22 09:41:40 +0000 UTC]

Keeping the chipped one for yourself? Or maybe you could include it in the set, even though flawed, if someone purchased the rest. I think someone who bought all three of the others would still really love it.

Athalour In reply to wynnesome [2010-03-26 08:53:47 +0000 UTC]

I'll probably give it away to a friend, or perhaps hide it in the park where I take my daily walk - and dream about who will find it I like the idea of hidden treasures, I do.
But your idea is a good one, too!
