Description Another portrait of Kerrie Donnelly...this time, a relatively "straight" edit...and yes, those curls are natural. I don't think I've ever had a model whose hair was easier to fix!

Lovely! I really like the contrast on her skin because it adds an overall softness to the photo.

Thanks! I actually blended the red channel back into the image, to lighten her skin more--I like it being extra contrasty...I don't usually do that--but it seemed to set off her hair nicely. Glad you agree!

She looks so very 'ost victorian'... 10s, 20s maybe...beautiful expression... vintage.

Yes...normally I would've aged an image like this one...but for some reason, the clean look of a "plainer" conversion appealed to me more. (I did do a vintage version--but it never really felt quite right.) It was fun working on it, though! (And isn't that half the fun of an image? Not knowing quite where it'll wind up? )

Is the necklace yours? It's sooo pretty!

Athansor In reply to kayceeus [2008-02-03 16:48:53 +0000 UTC]

Indeed it is! I used to wear it swing and ballroom dancing, back when I was dancing several nights a week. (That was BEFORE I discovered middle-aged knees! )

I dearly love pretty, romantic necklaces...which is quite funny, because I never wear them--as I'm really a jeans and sweatshirt kind of girl. Can't be bothered with all the fuss of looking as girly as I am on the inside. Which means I've collected a fair number of romantic necklaces--that never get worn--or didn't, before I started doing photography!

kayceeus In reply to Athansor [2008-02-04 15:21:39 +0000 UTC]

That is so funny because I also have a few romantic necklaces, bought for a certain occasion, that I've worn one time. My Mom has a ton of jewelry that she's going to leave me and I'm sure it'll just sit in the box, which is a shame because there's some very pretty stuff in there. I keep telling her to leave it to my daughter-in-law and granddaughter, they're both very girly!! I'm with you though, jeans and a sweatshirt are the norm for me too!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Athansor In reply to kayceeus [2008-02-05 02:18:56 +0000 UTC]

Yep--that's me! Buy it for one thing (even if it's something that hasn't happened yet--and may never! )--and that's the end of it. After that, it just sits around, looking pretty. I don't have to worry about anyone leaving me any jewelry, though--I'm the only girly one in the family. My mom and sister have some nice things (ironically, they're MUCH dressier than I am!)--but they're very classy and elegant--while I'm over-the-top romantic and Victorian. Their taste is definitely not mine--and vice versa!

So when we're too eccentric old ladies living next door to each other, we can shuffle around in our jeans and sweatshirts, invite `MYvonne over to visit us, and show off our romantic jewelry, wherever we have it stashed, and then put it back, and go outside and play with the dogs. (Well, maybe I'll dress you two up, in all the jewelry and long flowing robes, and shoot you, first--but THEN we can chuck it all, and go play with the dogs. )

You know I saw a movie yesterday with Diane Cannon in it and OMG she looks fantastic! She's gotta be what, 70 or so by now? I mean she was married to Cary Grant for Pete's sake! Anyway that's how I see us when we get old, earthy but still lookin' good!!

Athansor In reply to helcarosse [2008-02-03 16:40:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah--her hair was quite amazing. I was very jealous! And she is indeed, quite lovely. It's a very sweet, private kind of loveliness--not flashy or gaudy--not the sort that would jump out at you, if you were passing her, on the street--but if you happened to look at her--really look at her--for a moment or two, you'd find yourself mesmerized. I love faces like that. You look at them, and wonder what's going on in their heads--you can read a thousand stories in them--imagine a thousand romances...

Sadly, I don't feel I captured her as well as I'd've liked, as I normally only shoot people after having met them, beforehand--so that I have a chance to really *think* about how I see them. This, however, was a shoot where I met her and shot her on the same day...and I was also juggling two other models, one of whom was also new to me--and so I don't think I did all I could've.

Ah well--perhaps I'll have the chance to shoot her again, somewhere down the line!

I was bowled over by her eyes--hers, and her sister's--as her sister was also being shot that day. Apparently everyone in their family has these long, sloe-shaped eyes with outrageously long eyelashes. I was quite jealous--but delighted to be able to photograph them! (Normally, I add false eyelashes to my models, when making them up--but none were needed here--in fact, their lashes were so LONG--that their lower lashes actually got tangled up in their upper lashes--something I've never seen before!)

And nice to hear from you, my friend!

when I first saw the series ( especially the part with shots where your pretty model's shown en face ) , I thought of Winona Ryder and the movie " Little Women "Also, she's got this ' something ' in her eyes that brings about thoughts of portraits from the beginning of the XIXth . In my language we'd call these kind a ' roe-deer eyes" , intriguing in their shyness, lovely

Athansor In reply to Sarachmet [2008-02-03 02:01:51 +0000 UTC]

Now the funny thing about THAT, is that my boyfriend has been trying to convince me she looks like Winona Ryder--and yes, he mentioned "Little Women"!

And I agree with you about the eyes. I am absolutely fascinated by them. I'm an "eye" person--and hers are very fey, very sylph-like--they look like she's dreaming secret dreams--lovely dreams. (I love the phrase "roe-deer eyes"! We sometimes say "Bambi eyes"--but that's usually for larger eyes. I actually have rather Bambi-ish eyes--especially with a pair of false eyelashes on! "Roe-deer" sounds more shy, more delicate...it's a good description! )

Sarachmet In reply to Athansor [2008-02-03 02:15:28 +0000 UTC]

oh, that's quite funny indeed, a nice coincidence, or rather..you'll now need to admit she DOES resemble Wynona I'm not fluent in English and often lack idioms, etc, the phrase with the ' roe-deer " eyes sounded quite risky for me, but that's how we'd say it literally in Polish...
...don't mention eyes. Mine are rather strange and I know some people are afraid to look me in the eyes, haha -it's just they think I'm watching even if I'm not Owl-ish eyes they would make or some sort of...

Athansor In reply to Sarachmet [2008-02-03 18:11:20 +0000 UTC]

LOL--well, that's what Jack said--"SEE! I TOLD you she looks like Winona Ryder!" (Trust a boyfriend to rub it in! )

"Roe-deer" *might* be translated "Bambi eyes"--but I think it *sounds* much better the original way...it sounds more graceful, and delicate--a little wilder. Sometimes people say "cow eyes", too--but that doesn't sound at ALL graceful or romantic--and definitely is for larger, very liquid eyes with long dark lashes. Oh, we might sometimes say "doe eyes", too... These are typical "Bambi" or "doe" eyes: [link] , as are these: [link] "Cow" eyes would be larger still--and probably dark brown, with very heavy, dark lashes. (But even if I had any models with "cow" eyes, I wouldn't link to them--because it's not a very attractive way of calling attention to them! )

And for the record--I think your eyes are fantastic--yes, kind of owlish--very dramatic. If you were here, I'd keep you so busy posing for me, that you'd never have the chance to do your own work! I often photograph very "pretty" girls--but my favorites are the ones who aren't traditionally pretty--but are striking, or beautiful, because there's something unusual about them. They're the ones who make the best photos--the most dramatic stories, in my opinion, anyway!

I'm impressed, we definitely don't have so many words to describe eyes. These " roe-deer "are possibly the most popular in descriptions ( I mean , if there are any relations to the wild life to be shown ) , and possibly the cat eyes (quite popular in your language too, I suppose )...oh my, I may be wrong, now I begin to remind all these doggy , lizard, and so on- eyes, haha...
And I'd love to pose you, I always envy your lovely models the opportunity to wear such wonderful costumes, while mine are usually a matter of illusion within a frame . I'm sure they must feel very special during the session. My work's usually based on suggesting things, while your is a real theatrical rehearsal during taking shots!

Ah, but your suggestions are very, very powerful! Mine literal sets, while fun to build, leave the viewer less scope for the imagination! (And I am always awed, by how much you suggest, with so little...and trying to incorporate that into my own work, somehow! )

I agree--I'm jealous, too!!! Me, I can curl my hair with a curling iron...and have lovely ringlets for a whole two hours--and then it all falls out, and nothing's left but a gentle wave. It's not fair, I tell you!

(And thank you! When you've got a model this pretty, it's hard to screw up! )
