Description
This is the third installment of the story. This takes place several hours after Kendra's story and is from the prospective of Kura. Kura is a Tribal Elf and the Second Slave of Kendra. She has served Kendra for the past six years. Fourteen years ago she was captured when her village was raided by a tribe from an opposing nation. A battlemage from Charbytesia was also present and took her as a captive. She trained as a slave for two years before entering into the service of the battlemage. Who lost her in a card game to Kendra years later. Kura's main duty is to attend Kendra while she is teaching. Often seen kneeling beside Kendra's lectern while she is teaching. She has a natural affinity with magic, which Kendra tries to foster.
On with the story. Any feedback or comments would be appreciated.
‘Aht least zat ees ovair weeth.’ Kura thought to herself as she walked behind Kendra and Tobias.
Minutes ago the three were attending the Formal Night, a weekly event held by the University. The young Tribal Elf had spent the most of the night kneeling at attention next to her Mistress. At these types of events she and fellow slave Tobias were essentially “arm candy”. They were made presentable and dressed in fine silks and jewelry. But aside from looking good they had nothing to do. The University servants and slaves took care of the needs of their Mistress. All Tobias and Kura needed to do was act like statues and kneel on the cold floor.
In Kura’s opinion the highlight of the evening was when she could finally stand and leave. Kneeling for so long on the floor made her knees and legs hurt. At least when attending to her Mistress in class she had something soft to kneel on and the occasional fetch request which allowed her to stretch her legs. It felt so good to be given the command to stand and flow behind her Mistress.
The evening's festivities were still ongoing but the formal dinner had ended. Most of the students and faculty were milling about, talking and enjoying brandy when Kendra took her leave. Having met her social obligation as the representative of the Universities Patron she decided to retire. Now all Kura wanted to do was crawl onto her bedroll and go to sleep. Tomorrow was Seventh Day which meant she and Tobias could sleep in.
The three just left Athelardus Hall, the main dining hall for students and staff of the University. Kura had heard stories about Athelardus Greylock, the previous Emperor of Charbytesia. He was her Mistress’s great great grandfather and he supposedly gave a large endowment to the University. She also recalled stories of him back when she still lived amongst the Amphyrosia. Athelardus was the emperor who started the campaign against the Chevrian Tribes to the west of Charbytesia. The campaign against Kura’s people.
The three walked in silence back to the apartment. The only sounds that could be heard were the clacking of Kendra’s heels, a gentle clicking of Tobias’s hind claws, and light foot falls of Kura’s bare feet along the stone floor. Kura was tired and she could tell that her Mistress and Tobias were tired as well. She noticed that Tobias’s fluffy white tail was dragging on the ground and her Mistress was stifling a yawn.
After several minutes, Kura, Tobias and Kendra arrived at the apartment. It felt good to finally be home after such a long day. After entering the apartment Kendra turned to Tobias and Kura.
“I want to thank you both for accompanying me tonight.” Kendra said to them with a tired smile. “Kura, you are dismissed for the remainder of the evening.” She tilts her head to Tobias, “Tobias, I require your assistance in getting ready for bed. Please follow me.” With that Kendra turned and headed toward her bedroom with Tobias in tow. Kura couldn’t help but notice that Tobias’s eyes turned outward and his tail lifted to horizontal position. She had a feeling she wouldn’t see Tobias for the rest of the night.
Kura stretched her arms over her head and gave a small yawn. Now that she was dismissed she could finally relax for the rest of the night. She turned and made her way down the corridor that led to the slave quarters of the apartment. Once there, she carefully removed her silk dress, it was a gift from her Mistress to be worn on special occasions. What made it special was its color, it was in the blue and green tartan pattern that was popular among the Amphyrosia Tribe. It was custom made by a talented Tribal Elf dressmaker from the capital city of Tretonver. For Kura it was more than just a dress, it was a reminder of home so with care she hung it in the slaves livery. Where Kura and Tobias kept their clothing and jewelry.
After removing and storing her jewelry, Kura crept back to the great hall. She hesitated in the doorway and gave a quick peek to see if her Mistress’s bedroom door was closed. Seeing that it was she emerged into the great hall, completely in the nude. She liked this time of night, feeling the cool evening air against her skin. She had one last thing to do tonight before she went to bed.
Slowly she walked to the altar that resided near the entryway. Upon the altar rested shrines to three of the eight Goddesses, the creators of the world and the seven races. There was a shrine to Cairistìona, the Violet Goddess, whom Tobias worshiped. At the center of the altar was a shrine to Josselyne, the Red Goddess, who was worshiped by her Mistress. Lastly and for Kura the most important shrine, the one dedicated to Ballatulla, the Green Goddess. It was said that Ballatulla created the plants and trees that grew across the world. She also created the Tribal Elves, Kura’s people, when she fell to Korral.
Kura looked toward the altar and remembered those moments six years ago when she first entered Mistress Kendra’s service. Her former owner and enslaver, Baron Marmaducus Summerblade, had lost a substantial sum of money to Kendra in a card game of all things. To pay off his debt to Kendra, the Baron transferred his ownership of Kura to her. Kura would admit that their first meeting could have gone better. She had spent at least two days in the Herdulum Slaves Stockade waiting for the transfer of ownership to go through. After Kendra introduced herself and Tobias, Kura said a rather unkind phrase under her breath in the Tribal Elf language. To her surprise, a chuckle escaped Kendra’s lips and her words have stayed with Kura to this day.
“This one has spirit.” Kendra spoke, but not in the Noble Elf language, but in the flowing Tribal Elf language. “I will overlook this transgression this one time. But if you EVER speak to me like that again you will be punished. Severely.”
That surprised Kura as neither her previous owner nor most of the Noble Elves she encountered spoke the Tribal Elf language. Her new mistress instructed Tobias to bring Kura to their apartment, but to first get her cleaned up and some new clothes. While Kendra had to get something out of the University’s storage area.
When Kura and Tobias reached the apartment there was Kendra standing there to greet them. It was here that she laid down to Kura the ground rules of the apartment. She was allowed to use her study and borrow books, except for those in the locked cabinet. She was not allowed in her bedchambers without her permission but otherwise had free reign of the apartment. Except for that she was not allowed to sit or lay on any of the furniture in her study or great hall. If she was to sit it had to be on the floor.
After that she showed her to the altar which was typically near the entryway of every Noble Elf dwelling. Kura was surprised to see not just a shrine to Josselyne, but also shrines to Cairistìona and most importantly Ballatulla. Her previous master did not allow Kura to have a shrine to Ballatulla, in fact he forbade her from worshiping any Goddess other than Josselyne. She had a feeling that life with her new Mistress would be much better.
Kura slowly approached the altar, her eyes fixed upon the shrine to Ballatulla. She gave the shrine a small bow, then looked up toward the ceiling. Her arms extended outwards and held her hands upwards. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes.
“Great Mahthair, creatahr of ze trees ahnd fahrests, mahthair of ze treebahl elves. I, your humble servahnt, give you praise ahnd I seek your guidahnce.” She pauses then continues. “Eet hahs been fourteen years seence I lahst sahw ze fahrests of my beerth. while my current Meestress hahs treated me mahre zan fairly I ahm unhahppy. I meess being ahble to wahlk freely een ze fahrest, to feel your sahcred ground beneath my feet, to breathe ze sweet air. but I really meess my fahmeely. I pray zat you ahre keepeeng zem sahfe. please grahnt me ze strength to endure my serveetude unteel I cahn see zem ahgain. I ahsk ziss een your nahme.”
She stands still for a moment, then slowly lowers her arms, opens her eyes and looks back toward the altar. A smile creeps over her face as she bows toward the shrine of Ballatulla. Kura then slowly takes three steps back before turning toward the corridor to the slaves quarters.
Kura made her way to the slave's nook, a small windowless room that she shared with Tobias. She laid down on her bedroll and tried to make herself comfortable. After a moment she leaned up and looked toward her books. ‘Perhahps I should read sahmetheeng befahre bed.’ She thought to herself. She looked over the various books, but nothing seemed interesting to her. She then glanced over to Tobias’s books. They were mostly about music or fashion but one caught her eye “The damsel and the sailor”
“I do naht sink he would mind” she said to herself as got up, retrieved the book and then laid back on her bedroll. She opened the book and started reading. A few pages in a blush started to form in the tip of her ears that spread down her freckled face. Turning her cheeks a deep red.
“My wahrd.” she said as she continued to read.
