Description
Scientific names: Carnotaurus sastrei
Diet: dinosaurs, carcasses (at the Zoo they are fed rabbits and sheep)
Projected natural lifespan: 23 years
Length: 7.5 meters (~25 feet)
Weight: 1.7 tonnes (~1.9 tons)
Locality: Chubut, Argentina (La Colonia Formation), 72 Ma (Late Cretaceous Maastrichtian)
Exhibit: Carnivore Country
About:
Carnotaurus is one of the more unusual theropod dinosaurs. Sleek and slender, this carnivore was distinguished by the two short horns on top of its head and its unusually tiny arms, even shorter than those of T. rex. It is covered in scales and has pebble-like bumps on its back for protection.
Description and behavior:
Despite originally living at the very end of the Cretaceous period, Carnotaurus was unusually primitive for a theropod, belonging to the clade Ceratosauria, while most other theropods at this time belong to the more advanced Avetheropoda. As such Carnotaurus' behavior is quite unusual for a theropod. They appear to be ambush predators, often hiding in trees or bushes and lunging at prey immediately when it detects some. It also appears to be partially aquatic, sometimes hiding in water and prey on fish, similar to today's bears. Its deep tail appears to be a good swimming organ. They are also known for their distinctive coloration, including stripes on the tail and head. The tail stripes may have been used for camouflage and and head stripes for display, with males having more prominent head stripes than females. Mating also includes shoves between males using their distinctive horns. The winner of a shoving match gets to choose what female to mate with.
At the Zoo:
Carnivore Country houses five male Carnotaurus, Christopher, Amerigo, Marco, Hernando and Ferdinand.
