Description Scientific name: Camarasaurus supremus
Diet: high-growing plants (at the Zoo plant matter is shipped to its enclosure three times a day)
Projected natural lifespan: 45 years
Length: 15 meters (~49 feet)
Weight: 17 tonnes (~18.7 tons)
Locality: Colorado, United States (Morrison Formation), 155 Ma (Late Jurassic Kimmeridgian)
Exhibit: Morrison Legends

About:
Though not that popular, Camarasaurus is actually the most common sauropod of the Morrison Formation. The genus included three species and their range extended to at least five modern-day US states.

Description and behavior:
As stated above, Camarasaurus was the most common sauropod of the Morrison Formation. Sauropods are also a common sight at the Zoo, with sixteen genera housed in two exhibits. Rather coincidentally, most of those sauropods have names that appear early on in the alphabetical list of dinosaurs, so our journey through the Zoo has already covered most of the sauropods housed here. As I have told you multiple times in the past, sauropod behaviors appear to be a mix of those shown by modern lizards, elephants and giraffes, usually with one animal's behavior being more prominent than the others. Camarasaurus, however, seems to show each animal's behavior an equal amount of times. This may be due to being quite "average" sauropods, being mid-sized, and having medium neck and tail length. By comparison, taller macronarians such as Brachiosaurus have longer necks and more giraffe-like behaviors, and diplodocids like Apatosaurus have longer tails and more lizard-like behaviors.

At the Zoo:
The sauropod enclosure at Morrison Legends houses three Camarasaurus, all males, named Ham, Peter and Ken.

The behavior is inspired by lizards, elephants and giraffes.

Why didn't you say so?

...Well, I like the eye (it's the great, dark spot atop the head).

The real beast could feeda village, so there is a need to bring them back (just awaiting science to find a way),

hence I'm showing my support here.

Oh, the first comment was a mistake.

And the great dark spot atop the head is not the eye, but its crest. It uses it to get a mate. The real eye is behind the crest.

Oh my!

...Hiding behind the crest, eh? So it's a private eye?

LOL.

Let's just say the eye is being hidden from predators.
