Description Thought I would practice a landscape-type thing. In the ref photo (below) the sun is shining in a window of the castle ruin; here it's supposed to be the moon, but it may not have translated well.

Watercolor, 9" x 13", 2014.

Really nice technique and compelling imagery. I'm also partial to ruins.

Wow, makes me think of the artist who did a lot of the conceptual artwork for Lord of the Rings. James Howe? I love him <3
Good work!

I haven't heard of James Howe, but funny you should mention conceptual work for LotR. This ended up reminding me a little (and this is going to sound very pompous, I suppose) of Alan Lee's watercolors. He also did a lot of LotR stuff (and collaborated with Brian Froud on the book "Faeries".) He's one of my favorite artists.

Thanks!

Maybe that was him. But yes! Very similar ^^

If that's who you mean, it can't be just ALL my imagination that there's a teensy little bit of resemblance, hehe.

Now I just wish I understood what I did to give it that look, so I could replicate it.

This really works very well!Β  You accomplished a very lovely interpretation of the reference photo.Β  I especially like the sweeping, misty path leading to the circular moonlight shining through.Β  It has echoes of Bosch's painting whereΒ souls are traveling toward the white circular light at the moment of death.Β  Your treatment gives it an otherworldly feeling, but at the same time quite grounded in this world, with the crisp edges of the building.Β  Excellent tracery of the branches, fading ever so slightly into the background.Β  I practice watercolor, and can recognize how difficult it would be to get this just right (the rocks, the light), but you nailed it
