Description Do you guys know how hard it is to find an oval frame in the U.S. in this day and age? I'll tell ya: very. I could only find one style oval frame and the first one was miscut and didn't even fit!

Anyway, this is one of those paintings that I got the title first and thought it would make a funny painting. This is of course a porcine version of the playwright Oscar Wilde, author of "The Importance of Being Earnest". The book he's holding is a play on this title and it reads "the Importance of Being Breakfast". I had the sketch for this one for a few years and when I saw the Victorian monsters in an oval layout done by , I was inspired to finally get to work on this one. He's 16" x 20" on oval canvas, painted with acrylics.

I love Oscar Wilde also...and despite the quality of the artwork being good...I must say I don't find it so much funny as offensive...

Offensive? Seriously? You've got to be kidding.

Depicting Oscar Wilde as a pig? How is it NOT offensive?

Er, quite. Sorry? I felt I should make my opinion known as an avid follower of dear oscar...

Well, as an avid follower of dear Oscar, you would know better than I that during his life he took great pleasure in turning prudish Victorian sensibilities on their ear by being as outrageous and vulgar as possible, and he relished offending people. Besides, this is not Oscar Wilde depicted as a pig, It's a pig that thinks it's Oscar Wilde. I just thought the old saying would make a funny picture. If it offends you, I hope you're not expecting an apology, cause you ain't gettin' one here.

I sincerely don't, just as I said before it is only my opinion and I felt like making it known. (Besides! Do you not say in your signature, "Rebelling against meaningful art since 1992? ")As for Oscar being vulgar? He was not so much that, as a speaker of blatant truths. Furthermore, whatever he did to offend people was usually done so to inflate his own ego, and really now, as far as I'm concerned just being Oscar Wilde gave him the right to do whatever he pleased!

Isn't this argument intresting? -grins-

If there's one thing I have in common with Oscar Wilde, it's an enormous ego!

ATLbladerunner In reply to choffman36 [2008-04-21 23:04:07 +0000 UTC]

I don't know if it would qualify as a search since I looked in 5 or 6 places and this was the only one I could find! I was actually hoping for a gold frame with all kinds of flowery stuff all over it, but the dark frame looks nice too.

Nice....

Oh Yeah I know what you mean about Frames, anything shaped or really big is a pain to find, and then when you do....$$$$!
The frame is worth more than the piece!
I have found some cool frames in the dollar store in the past though.

ATLbladerunner In reply to Sugarballs [2008-04-20 12:50:20 +0000 UTC]

If I hadn't found this one I would have started looking in junk/antique shops. A man I know who runs a wholesale frame shop told me the reason the roundish frames are so hard to find here in the US is because no one makes them here anymore. They've kind of gone outta style and now the only place that makes oval frames is China, and few companies import them here.

Brilliant. I was hoping it it was an Oscar Wilde spoof from the title... and it was. I really like the very smug expression. Very fitting.
