Description Hey folks! This is a commission I did for my good pal of wrestler/actor Tor Johnson, best known as his role in Ed Wood's Plan 9 from Outer Space! I thought it turned out pretty well. I enjoy doing these brown paper drawing and the scratchboards, even though it's so unlike my usual style.

ink and white pencil on brown paper, levels adjusted in PS for darker blacks and whiter whites.

Hope all you guys are doing well!

Thanks! I just found a pad of this paper a few months ago and have been busy working my way through it. It's basically the same paper they make brown paper bags out of so it has a rough texture which is hell on my brush pens (each one of these brown paper drawings pretty much destroys one brush pen), but it's such a cool effect! Glad you like these and I appreciate the faves!

I find synthetic brushes and brush pens don't last as long as sable brushes do. I just buy the sable brushes and treat them like gold. I've had one brush that's lasted me about ten years now. Though, not quite as portable or as handy as a brush pen, I will admit. Is it a felt pen in a brush-shape, or a synthetic brush nib? Who makes it? It gives a great effect!

When I'm painting, I usually just buy a pack of inexpensive small liner brushes that work well for me and then just throw them away when they start getting frayed. I'm pretty rough on them, but they'll still last me a good long while. The brush pens are a felt type pen with a brush shaped tip that's kind of flexible. After using it a while the tip gets a little weak and spread out, but I have a paranoia about spilling a pot of ink on whatever I'm working on, so I don't use real brushes to ink very often. The ones I use are made by Faber Castell, you should buy a couple and give them a try!

I think I have some of those already! I don't get the same line with those as I get with a sable brush, but I'm pretty old school like that. I find I save money with the sable brushes cause they don't fray at all. If you take care of them, they last forever. But I'm not that hard on mine, in fact, I'm very careful with them.

I have a few ones for rough work that's not as important, and the faber castell ones for sketches and stuff.

I've spilt bottles of ink. It's not so bad.

Yeah, I like being able to make a thin line which can be difficult with a brush pen, especially if you've used it for a little while, but my hand is not extremely steady so I have a hard time with brushes anyway. I do a lot of scumbling with my brushes so the tips end up split lots of times or just unable to form a point. I've only spilt ink once I think, but I'm always paranoid about it! Same with painting, always worried I'm gonna make a wrong stroke! Now I save all of my paint palettes with all the colors I've used on a painting just in case my brush slips. I've got about thirty little 8 well palettes and so far that's been enough.

My ability to ink has suffered with my health problems, as my hands get shakier. But a lot of the comic images in my gallery are inked by brush, which I later correct any mistakes after scanning it in.

Yeah, scrumbling is nice but it is hell on brushes.

That's an interesting technique with the palettes. I just remix. I don't have problems mixing colours.
