Born in the slums of Birmingham, England, Jason Wyngarde was the son of a clerical worker single mother who had to work hard to support her child. He never knew his father as his conception was the result of a one-night stand. Throughout his childhood, Jason was never really interested in school and got his "best learning" from the streets. Jason ran with some punk kids in a juvenile gang from the age of 11.

When he turned thirteen, Jason discovered his mutant ability to create illusions. As he grew older, he used his newfound powers to get away with crimes and even create his own hoodlum gang, giving himself the name "Mastermind". However, he did not use discretion in his mutant powers. He made a lot of enemies and knew that even his powers would not protect him forever.

In addition to his enemies, Jason got himself a young wife and two young daughters, Martinique and Regan. While doing his best to outmaneuver his criminal opponents, Jason neglected his family's welfare. One night, when he returned home drunk after celebrating the defeat of a rival gang, he opened the door only to find his wife Pauline drawing a gun on him. At gunpoint, Jason was forced to sit down and listen to how his actions had hurt his family. His wife told him how he had missed Regan's birthday party, but another of his many enemies had attended, waiting to ambush Jason. When he failed to show, the thug instead showed his wife photographs of Jason's philandering with other women (One of his affairs led to the conception of Megan Gwynn, who would grow up in the young X-Man Pixie). When Jason didn't believe her, she provided the explicit photos given to her.

Jason was then given an ultimatum. He was to get up and walk away that instant, never to return. He asked Pauline if she'll shoot him while their daughters were asleep in the next room if he refused. Restraining tears, Pauline shook her head and then pointed the gun to her own head, reluctantly threatening the man she'd loved to leave, so their daughters wouldn't grow up with both of their parents gone. Jason quickly stood up and slowly backed out, insisting he would do whatever she wanted as long as she didn't pull the trigger. As he closed the door and walked into the night, Jason turned his back on his old life.

Following the argument, Jason decided to make a new life in the States, taking up a job at Coney Island as a mentalist, using his illusion powers to make his feats look real in his performances. However, this life wouldn't last long as one night, Jason was approached at a bar by who he thought was his ex-wife Pauline. When he realized it was not the booze or his own guilty conscience talking to him, Jason sobered up enough to listen to what she was saying to him. Whoever he was talking to was not Pauline so when he left the bar with her to speak privately, he led her to a back alley and drew his revolver on her.

In a flurry of motion, Jason was on the ground with his own gun's barrel halfway up his nose. But the false Pauline did not fire, instead telling Jason that she was like him and had a proposal for him. When Jason said he did not understand, the woman revealed herself to be a shapeshifter and fellow mutant, and that her name was Mystique. She explained that she was an emissary of Magneto, the master of magnetism and that he was looking for potential members for his Brotherhood in his goal of mutant superiority over humans. Promised power than he can't ever imagine, Jason accepted and joined Magneto's Brotherhood as one of its founding members, now going by his old alias "Mastermind".

As one of the oldest members of the Brotherhood of Mutant Supremacy, he was put into the team's main strike force led by Quicksilver, however, he rarely deploys with them, as his powers make him central to maintaining the Brotherhood's extensive network of supporters and allies. Despite this, he occasionally participated in repeated clashes with the X-Men. However, when the Brotherhood's assassination attempt on Senator Robert Kelly in Washington DC failed, Mastermind was among those who were defeated by the X-Men and left to be arrested by the authorities, while Magneto was incarcerated within a specialized plastic prison in Guantanamo Bay. While he was held in captivity at a local police station in Washington, Mastermind was visited by second-rate villain Mesmero (disguised as an FBI agent wanting to interrogate Mastermind) to look through his mind for critical information about the X-Men without his consent. These info from Mastermind was used by Mesmero to infiltrate the Xavier Institute and leads his Demi-Men agents in a systematic takedown of the X-Men, but Mesmero ultimately failed.

Shortly after this incident, several mutant criminals and terrorists, including Mastermind, were sent to be imprisoned at the infamous Alcatraz Island, where the federal prison there was reopened and retrofitted to house superpowered criminals like the Brotherhood. However, one night at New Year's Day, there was a mass escape at Alcatraz Island, where several prisoners including Mastermind, Mesmero, Toad, Blob, Pyro, Avalanche, and Unus the Untouchable escaped. Some prisoners, including Mesmero, were located by a team of X-Men and recaptured, but the Brotherhood members remained at large until they joined Magneto in his uprising at Genosha. However, Mastermind didn't rejoin the Brotherhood after the Alcatraz outbreak and his current status remains unclear....

XXXXXX

After what happened with the assassination attempt on Senator Kelly and hearing about Magneto's own incarceration at Guantanamo Bay, Mastermind won't be rejoining with the Brotherhood of Mutant Supremacy anytime soon. He believes that going back to Magneto would just lead him back behind bars or worse. That and he holds a grudge on Mesmero at what he did to him disguised as an FBI agent. Instead, he has decided to stay in the shadows and bid his time to exact vengeance on the X-Men, and he will do so with his new friends, who are named Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost....

Still with the bad guys, and today's is one which most of you will probably only remember from the original Dark Phoenix Saga. Similar to his main counterpart, my interpretation of Mastermind is that he's one of the founding members of the Brotherhood, makes sense since he was part of the Brotherhood's first ever roster when they first appeared. He is a member of the Brotherhood's main strike force, consisting of all the heavy-hitters (Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Toad, Sabretooth, Blob, Pyro, Avalanche, Juggernaut, Blink, Unus, and Mimic), but he's not often with them that often unless it's in a mission where his powers are needed.

Coming from a criminal background, Mastermind is a natural rogue (not the character) who uses his illusionary abilities to manipulate helpless people and get what he wants. This makes him seem untrustworthy to his allies.

I don't a lot to talk about design notes. I wanted him to have a simple design before the façade he takes in the Dark Phoenix Saga, with him just in a trench coat and smoking a cigarette. His face was inspired by his X-Men Evolution counterpart.

I hope you guys like it.
