Benjamin J. Grimm was born on Yancy Street on Manhattan's Lower East Side, where he and his family grew up in poverty. His father, an alcoholic, was unable to hold a job and often abused his wife and sons. Much of the family's income came from Ben's older brother, Daniel Grimm Jr., who obtained funds illegally as leader of the Yancy Street Gang. Ben always idolized his brother for his strength and tough-guy attitude, but it wouldn't last as Daniel was later killed in a gun battle against the Thompson Avenue Gang, one of the Yancy Street Gang's biggest rivals. The death of Daniel shattered the family and left an eight-year-old Ben embittered against the world. When Ben was thirteen, he succeeded his brother as the leader of the Yancy Street Gang after proving himself by stealing from a local pawnshop.

In age 14, Ben's parents passed away; his mother caught in the crossfire of a gang war and his father died from heavy alcoholism. Ben was then taken in by his uncle Jake at his home in Central City, California, where he rose from poverty to become a successful physician. At first, Ben resisted his new guardians' kindness towards him. But eventually, he came to return their love. He left his life with the Yancy Street Gang, and attended Central City High School, where he became the star linebacker for the school football them, earning himself the nickname "The Grimm Reaper".

While in high school, Ben befriended local nerd Reed Richards, who was often a target of school bullies for his unique intellect. Taking inspiration from how his brother once took care of him. Ben took it upon himself to protect Reed those who would seek to persecute him. While he valued Reed's assistance in his trigonometry homeworld, he did view him as a true friend.

Reed and Ben parted ways when they graduated high school. Reed would go on to earn several college degrees until he was recruited into the Future Foundation, a government-sponsored think tank. As for Ben, after graduating from the University of California at Berkeley, he would go on to join the U.S. Air Force and became a highly skilled fighter pilot. When he left the military, he would become a test pilot for NASA to fly their experimental spaceplanes.

During his time as a test pilot, Ben was reunited with his old friend Reed, who recruited him for a top-secret spaceflight program by the Future Foundation to investigate "the silver beacon", a spatial anomaly that emitted high amounts of cosmic radiation in Near-Earth Space. In their mission, Ben served as the pilot for Reed's spaceship, the Marvel-1, along with his passengers, Reed's fiancée and fellow scientist Sue Storm and Sue's younger sister Johnnie Storm, who served as Ben's co-pilot. They intended to extract some of the anomaly's cosmic power for study, but suddenly without warning "the silver beacon" burst, unleashing ultra-high levels of cosmic radiation on the four passengers and wrought havoc on the ship's controls. Ben was forced to abort the flight and return to Earth.

Once back on Earth, the four discovered that the cosmic radiation had triggered mutagenic changes in their bodies, granting them superpowers. Unlike the purely beneficial abilities bestowed on his teammates in the Fantastic Four, however, Ben's body was transformed by his newfound power. He had gained superhuman strength, but his body was forever altered, transforming his previously organic, carbon-based body into one made almost entirely of silicates in a way the brightest minds of the Baxter Building still cannot comprehend. It took a long time for Ben to come to grips with his new appearance, and he often finds himself as sort of the odd man out when it comes to the team. Now called "The Thing, Ben is often the brunt of harsh jokes by the people of New York, especially a younger version of the Yancy Street Gang, who constantly prank him when he passes by Yancy Street during missions. He also often mopes about the issue that he may return normal, but he always come around to help his family and friends.

Like his original counterpart, the Thing is very stubborn and hot-tempered, but is actually very kind-hearted and often well-like by others, especially his girlfriend and later wife Alicia Masters, who sees him as the people he is instead of what he looks like. He's also sarcastic, quick to throw a wise crack in his Brooklyn accent. Taking elements from the Ultimate comics and Fant4stic, Ben and Reed were old friends when they were kids.

As for his design, he has his classic "Kirby monster" appearance, but I gave him a more humanoid anatomy, especially his face and the number of fingers and toes he has. His Fantastic Four mission suit is similar to Ultimate Thing's costume with the sleeveless shirt.
