Description (prints and products at: society6.com/audreybenjaminsen )

Lately I’ve been very inspired by the Ancient Chinese religion of Daoism. I wanted to represent the concept of “Yin” and “Yang” as conjoined twins (separate beings who work as one.) The twins holds a glass orb with sloshing water, representing the universe and it’s balance. An enlightened person is above, and demons are below. I’ve not been feeling very happy with my work recently, but I mostly like how this came out.

Like Socrates, Lao Tzu saw an impasse on, or foundationlessness of the human social construct. Out of binary oppositions or dichotomies that the commoners see and base their ideas of the world on, Lao Tzu pointed out the nature of human perceptions of the world. Unlike Socrates, who took the hemlock, Lao Tzu opted to exile himself in the end.

Akin to Jacques Derrida, he also expressed similar thought of 'out of the text, there is nothing'. However, Lao Tzu did not seek to break the human illusion on morality and aesthetics. Out of everyday language, there really isn't a way out of the jail of time and space. Yet there is a way to prepare your mind for the final leap or the ultimate transformation, like Zhuang Tzu's butterfly dream.

It is the 'wu-wei' (non-action).

Non-action is not no-action-at-all. It is really about making a choice.

The choice that defeats destiny.

A true choice.

Many of us spend our lives not realizing that we rarely, if not seldom, make a choice. Nietzsche made a choice. He made a choice over a horse and went mad. Apart from Derrida, or maybe Levinas, Nietzsche really is the closest thing I could think of to Lao Tzu.

If it is all a dream, make sure it is a good dream, the Old Master says!

Your yin-yang symbol seems to represent air and water. The sun represents fire but where is Earth? This is a very cool design. I can see printing 2 copies, folding in half and making a Chinese lantern.

Oooh! I love this. I love how the water in the bowl makes the symbol and the Sun on one dress, Moon on the other. I like the four legs for balance (is that part of Daoism, the world being a cube and not a sphere?) and the chinoiserie behind them, like a wardrobe/sideshow entrance.

I think the idea of conjoined twinhood would have been stronger if they had 3 legs between them instead of 4. But I love the details in the background--very delicate and pretty.

Did you spell Daoism (taoism) w/ a D on purpose? If so, awesome. I hate that random T in that word...

I love the beautiful symbolism and contrasting imagery, the colours, the art nouveau inspired cartouche thing (the frame thingy, you know ) It reminds me somewhat of Dave Mckean's work in Arkham Asylum by Grant Morrison. Love it!

I believe the yin yang symbol is generally represented with yin flowing downwards, with the idea that cool air sinks and hot air rises.
Artistically fascinating however, and I love the use of muted tones.
