It had been three months. Three months since that awful day, and it was finally going to be left in the past.
She had been driving for hours. Having spent two days on the road was starting to wear on her. Her fingers grasped the visor, pulling down the mirror to reveal her reflection. “Ugh..” she mumbled to herself. Her eyes droopy, accessorized with light purple eye bags. Her hair in a messy top knot. She wore a grey hoodie that sported a small stain from yesterday’s McDonalds, and leggings. “What a great first impression.” She thought to herself with a scowl. She flipped the visor back up and tried to shake any negative thoughts that may be stewing.
This was a fresh start for her, and Hollis. Minnesota, while it will always be her home, didn't have anything else to offer her. Her life had become stagnant. Boring. This, and a broken heart, were the main motivators for moving to a brand new place miles away. States away. Virginia. While she was scared shitless of starting somewhere new, she was also excited. A new barn to school and compete at. New friends, horses - how could that go wrong? Hollis would be happy there too. From the ads online, the barn seemed luxurious. “Canyon Moon Estate” was her destination. She would be their new eventer; training under someone by the name of Garrett Callaway.
After a few more hours of driving past rolling hills, she arrived. Her truck, followed by its trailer, slowed once it reached the gravel road. White fences lined the road and the pastures on each side of it. A large brick building with a courtyard could be seen up in the distance. After parking her trailer in front of the courtyard, she quickly scanned the area for anyone walking by. Seeing she was in the clear, she reached in the back seat for a different shirt. She grabbed a long black sleeve shirt from her bag and started pulling her hoodie off over her head, flinging it in the back. She slid her arms through the clean shirt and got ready to pull it over her head. “Ahem.” Her head shot to the side, seeing a man standing outside of her truck, arms crossed. “Shit” she whispered to herself, quickly shoving her shirt over her head. “I’ve been here for five minutes and someone has already seen me in my fucking bra.” She cursed in her head. She gave the man an “oops!” smile and opened the door.
The man was tall, at least 6’3. Tan olive complexion, short dark brown hair. His deep hazel eyes stared down at her. His jaw, covered in short stubble, rolled before he spoke. His mouth opened “You must be-”. “Odette!” a woman yelled, running down towards the two. Odette averted her eyes from the man's mouth, to the woman who now had her arms wrapped around her. “Oohf, hello!” Odette beamed with a smile. The woman had a beautiful deep complexion, curly hair wrapped up in a ponytail that seemed to bounce with every move. Bright colored clothing that seemed to match the woman’s outgoing personality. “My name’s Dove! I’m so excited that you’re here, its been a while since we’ve had anyone new around.” Her smile reached her eyes. “It’s nice to meet you! I’m happy to finally be here.” Odette returned with the same enthusiasm. “Lemme help get your boy!” The two women walked to the back of the trailer, unloading the liver chestnut stallion that stood inside. “This is Hollis.” Odette said with a pat on his neck. The stallion let out a snort and walked alongside her. His eyes were big as he took in the new surroundings. “Follow me, we can let him out in the indoor arena to stretch his legs!” Dove exclaimed. The two women walked ahead, Hollis in between them. “Oh! My bags.” Odette stopped, turning around. Garret already had each suitcase in his hand. “I got it, I’ll put them in your room.” He stated plainly, his voice deep and husky. Odette gave a shy smile in thanks before turning back towards the arena.
Once at the entrance, Odette slid Hollis’s halter off. He didn’t let another second go by before breaking into a gallop. Throwing his head around, kicking up dirt. “He seems happy to be off the trailer.” Dove laughed, watching the stallion. Odette nodded with a grin. She turned her head back, watching the dark haired man walk down the courtyard. “Dove, who is that?” Dove turned to look in her direction. “Oh, that's Garrett. He’s a little different, but I think you’ll like him.” She responded with a comforting smile. Odette continued to watch him. “Lets hope so.”
