Beautiful conceptual thinking here. I think you have captured it really well! Allthough (I know you can't really change much if it's under wire) but perhaps some more fresher leaves with the deads leaves would add a little more symbolosim.
Dead leaves showing that they are trapped and can't escape the point that they have died and fresh ones to say that more and more get trapped...

I really like this one. I think keeping it in color was a better choice too.
The fence and the wood already give you drab colors so the leaves stick out all the more. It's a good sense of 4 or 5 different patterns.
Your right that the leaves give it focus. Leaving them there brings questions of to mind or how they got situated that way and stuck that way in such a peculiar place. Leaving them out would have just been an exercise in patterns.
Only critique is that that the light seems uneven and maybe that is just the natural light. I wonder if pulling back the contrast a little wouldn't make it even out a little and stick the leaves even further out.
Overall: Great Job. I like it much.

In my eyes the strong feeling of the concept comes from the tightness between the metal net and wood board, it really feels that the leaves are trapped there badly. The contrast and texture are top notch.

Your square work is fantastic, I'm really glad you decided to dabble in this. Excellent contrast and levels, and brilliant tonal range. As somebody else said, it looks like a HDR shot. Absolutely stunning, i can't believe something so so simple can look so amazing. Keep up the fantastic work.
