I actually wasn't very fond of Umbreon up until three years ago, when I did my first Nuzlocke Challenge.
The game was SoulSiver, and when I got Elliot the Eevee from Bill in Goldenrod City, I initially wanted to make him a Jolteon. It took so long to find a Thunderstone, though, that he kept wanted to evolve into Espeon or Umbreon. Every time he leveled up I kept cancelling his evolutions, and eventually found an Everstone to give him. I already had a Psychic type and a Dark type on the team, and I didn't need another of either. Plus, I was still hoping to get a Jolteon. When the Murkrow on my team got killed by a critical hit, though, I felt it had to be fate and let Elliot evolve into Umbreon.
From then on, whenever I was in a bind, Elliot the Umbreon would always step in and save the day. Despite many close calls, he outlasted my starter, helped me win the remaining Johto badges and all the Kanto badges, and survived the battle with Red atop Mt. Silver.
While my favorite Pokemon tend to be electric, water, or ground types, there will always be a special place in my heart for Umbreon.

And yeah, Murkrow's loss was a tragic one indeed. I'd been hoping to use him in the ghost type gym too, and some rando on Route Whatever KO'd him.Β Β
But hey, it gave rise to the legendary reign of Elliot, so there's THAT silver lining.
